I realize this is moot since the problem has been resolved, but I need you to recognize is that this does not answer the question I asked.
I was looking more for the method used rather than the tools, and a VLAN configuration cannot be tested with a single laptop or analyzer - you're going to need a minimum of two devices, and with just two you're going to be doing a lot of plugging, unplugging & possibly reconfiguring of ip addresses.
