how to factory reset the M4100-50-POE (FSM7250Pv1h1) — 48‐port FE + 2 GE Combo L2 Managed PoE Switch
How do you factory reset the M4100-50-POE switch to default when you do not know the password and username?

As per the Hardware Installation Guide this M4100 model should have a Mini USB port which is likely more readily available than a serial port on your computer these days. With that connected to a computer and a terminal emulator you can stop the boot process over console and erase the config as outlined in the article from.
I have the mini usb connector but it displays its a CCP2102 USB to UART Brigde Contoller and when I update the drivers it is indicates there are no drivers available.
There are two slide buttons (USB and DB9) next to the serial connector and USB. what are they for?
The serial connection keeps returning "unable to open connection to com1 unable to open serial port"

Go to the download section where besides the firmware you can find the UART driver for Windows. That's the one you need on Windows.
I realize that I have grown up in the era where drivers installed via Windows Update was not a thing and I instinctively still look for drivers at vendor pages. It seems there is a gap between my age and (guessing) Windows 7 and more recent era where you and others have come accustomed to check for drivers updates via Windows update first. - You somewhat make me feel old ;-)
Anyhow, that switch is to switch between the DB9 and USB console port. Only one of the 2 ports works at any given moment so if you use USB Port the switch needs to be in the position USB. For connecting a console, please also consider KB pages such as the following one.
