Manged Switch Trunk Port Light

Sorry if this is a confusing question on my part....

I use a number of Netgear managed switches in a VLAN network.  I've noticed that the "trunk" port on the respectively connected switches will show lots of activity under load (repeated flashing at the port). The other ports on the respective switches (untagged) show normal port activity (periodic flashing at the respective port(s)). I've always assumed that the trunk line is carrying packets from multiple networks, and that is the cause of the increased port light activity. Is this a correct assumption?

  • Hi,

Your assumption is correct. A trunk port will carry all the traffic, from the various VLANs, across to the next switch/router. Therefore, trunks/uplinks are always the most busy links in the network.

Looking at the port LEDs blinking will give an indication of how busy the port is. If you want to see a more detailed breakdown of the traffic, per port, then log into the Web GUI and navigate to: "Monitoring" --> "Ports" --> "Port Statistics".

    Cheers
