Next Hop IP Address Help (M4100-50G)

Hi,

I need some help on understanding how the next hop ip address works on mulitple switches.

I have;

Router on 10.0.0.1 (vlan 10)

Netgear switch 1 (10.0.0.2) connected on port 1. vlan 10 setup and port 1 & 50 set as tagged with pvid = 10

Netgear switch 2 (10.0.0.3) connected to switch 1 on port 50, tagged with pvid = 10.

For switch 1 i have the next hop ip address as 10.0.0.0, 255.255.255.0, next hop ip address 10.0.0.2.

Default route 0.0.0.0 next hop ip address 10.0.0.1

For switch 2 i have the next hop ip address as 10.0.0.0, 255.255.255.0, next hop ip address 10.0.0.3

All other ports on the switches are set as untagged with pvid = 10.

Is this correct? I seem to be able to ping a pc connected on switch 2 but not connect to it but if i put another pc on switch 2 then i can connect to it.

Can`t seem to get my head round vlan routing.

Thanks

James

    Hi jameswiltshire

    Welcome to the community!

    Yes, you are correct!

    For the next hop ip address as 10.0.0.0, 255.255.255.0, next hop ip address 10.0.0.2. we called it 'directly connected route', it mean all L2 traffic(same subnet 10.0.0.0/24) will forwarding from VLAN10 member port(based on MAC address table);

    For Default route 0.0.0.0 next hop ip address 10.0.0.1, we called it 'default static route', it mean all L3 traffic(different subnet with 10.0.0.0/24) will forwarding to the next hop(10.0.0.1);

    But I'm sorry not catch your problem, could you please describe more detailed for PC client not reachable problem?

    Hope it helps!

      Hi,

      Thanks for the reply. I think i get vlan routing and next hop now. My problem is i can`t connect to the management page of a phone that is on the second switch when i`m connected to the first switch. I can ping the phone but not connect unless i connect my laptop to the second switch.

      Thanks

        All devices play in the 10.0.0.0/24 (255.255.255.0) subnet on this VLAN 10?

        Double check the Voice VLAN feature does not play against your intentions, e.g. putting the traffic from a phone into a different VLAN than what you think.

    James,

    As there is only a single VLAN, it's all plain L2, and no routing involved at all for connections on the VLAN 10. Carefully check the trunk link between the switches (VLAN ID 10 tagged), and the ports (VLAN ID 10 untagged, PVID 10) - that's all.

    Regards,

    -Kurt
