Vlan Tagging, Port Trunking Switch along with Unmanaged Switch
Hi
Might be a basic question but I am in the process of designing a network which will involve me creating some Vlans and some port trunking.
I have netgear GT108 V2 switches which I believe supports port trunking and Vlans.
So I will connect these switches in daisy chain to the router.
The router supports port trunking and vlan and thats where it will be setup to separate out lans to separate vlans.
Now my question is if I connect the vlan tagged ports from the above switches to some netgear unmanaged switch just for the sake of multiplying ports to connect to various PCs, will it even work ?
And will it maintain the vlan and won't go crazy ?
Also connected to this, I will need to share a common printer above separate LANs (on separate vlan). is that even possible ? :o
Thanks a lot in advance! :)

If the ports are being used to connect PCs, you most likely will want them "untagged", and, yes, you can connect a "non-VLAN-aware" switch to an untagged port on a "VLAN-aware" switch and all the ports will be members of whatever VLAN the port is configured for. Also connected to this, I will need to share a common printer above separate LANs (on separate vlan). is that even possible ? :o
Yes, this IS possible, however making it happen can be a challenge.
I often question WHY people choose to VLAN their networks - it's often done because of a misguided belief that it enhances security - which it can in a properly designed infrastructure, but in the average SMB environment, it just gets in the way of sharing the resources that are the reason the network exists. - s_trivAspirant

Thanks a lot. In the meanwhile I was reading a bit more about tagging and un tagging and now connecting with your response. It makes sense! :)
Thanks Again.:)
