Do I need extra SW to use TFTP upload/download on Windows 10

I'd like to use the TFTP Upload and Download interface on my company's Netgear GS724Tv4 Smart Switch.  I'm using a Windows 10 PC connected directly to the switch.  I've been able to use the HTTP upload/download with no problem.  The HTTP interface doesn't have options to upload any of the logs.  We don't have a syslog server, and we need to be able to capture the logs periodically.

I've tried a couple of approaches to entering the windows pathname for the upload, for example:

/C/Users/FishEyeGuy/Downloads/logfile.txt

and

/./Users/FishEyeGuy/Downloads/logfile.txt

I've installed the TFTP client on the PC.  Do I need any other software, like a TFTP server on the PC?  We're trying to keep the amount of software on the PCs in the network to a minimum, so I'd like to avoid installing additional software.

The command-line interface using

# copy nvram:errorlog tftp://<IP address>/C/Users/FishEyeGuy/Downloads/errorlog.txt

doesn't work either.

Any suggestions would be great,

Thanks,

FishEyeGuy

  • Hi DaneA,

After some research and some digging around on the PC, I figured out that the firewall was blocking the TFTP port.  After allowing Inbound and Outbound UDP for the TFTP port, I was able to get the TFTP server to work.

  • A look at the error logs shows that the switch was trying to find a TFTP server at the IP address I gave it and timed out when it didn't find one. A bit of closer reading would have pointed out that the switch was acting as the client, not the server (The label on the Upload GUI does say "Server Address" after all).

Which brings up another question: Why can't I upload log files using the HTTP File Upload screen?  Are the log files sent as text files?  The HTTP interface can handle the image files and config files, why not the log files?

    Thanks,

    FishEyeGuy

    Hi FishEyeGuy,

We have been using TFTP32 for uploading and downloading files in our switches. Tech support file shows configuration as well as crashes and other logs. TFTP upload only supports specific log files.

      Thanks, JohnCarloV.

I tried the SolarWinds TFTP server with no luck.  I tried with the web service and using the command line interface.  A check of the logs showed that the TFTP client on the switch timed out.

      I'll give TFTP32 a try.
