- Mar 16, 2018A switch is not a router. A router, particularly in the home router segment, is commonly a firewall, NAT, Wi-Fi Access Point, IP router and switch. A switch alone is used to connect multiple Ethernet segments (cables) together. Because a switch has no firewall, it can no concept of opening ports.
If you need a router, get a router.
