MTU settings XS512EM switch
Hi under port status it says my maximum MTU is 9216 on all ports my RAX120 is set at 1492 my readynas 626x is set at 9000 i have set my mac to 1492 i guess this would create a bottleneck at the switch but i just can not see how to change the MTU in the switch any help would be great
You can keep (wherever the adapters and drivers supporting) a high or even maximum Jumbo Frame, typically 9014 on all the wired adapters.
Wireless does not support any Jumbo Frame, so nothing to change from the defaults there, too.
The switch is "just" able to handle frames on "any" size. Thus nothing to change there either.

Why on the switch? Assuming your NAS and the Mac are on the wired network, the bottleneck eg. when it comes to NAS access using SMB 3.x protocol - is the low MTU on your Mac, and probably devices connected to your RAX120. SMB 3.x can take advantage of Jumbo Frames for example.
When it comes to the RAX120 - I'm not convinced the MTU configureable does apply to the internal switch ports - much more likely it's a limit set on the Internet/WAN adapter.
Said this: What is the point to limit the Mac wired adapter to the low (even if it's the "standard") MTU? Your router can deal with the jumbo frames, the router would notify if there is an initial attempt to send a JF through the router to the Internet by the PMTUD process.
Because the XS512EM is a L2 switch (read no routing) there is nothing the switch could do if one would lower the MTU - because the traffic does not go over a router connection, there would not be any PMTUD action happen at the switch, just between the connected devices.
What should the MTU be set to on the mac then i also have a Windows 10 htpc on the network what should its MTU be set at
Actually at the moment the mac is connected wirelessly due to some works being carried out in the house but normally it is hard wired into the home network XS512EM

Thank you for that so you are saying that devices connected to the XS512EM switch dont go through the router at all so basically there are no real limitations the jumbo frame size of 9000

Any LAN connected device - being on the XS512EM or the router GbE ports in fact.
