GS305 (v1 & v3): speed limited to 100mb/s.

Bought this switch a few years ago and didnt realise that all this time the issue with the speed wasn't the Pi3 that was connected to it but the switch itself. For some bizzare reason that I can't fathom, the GS305 is reducing the speed pf the connection to 100mb/s even though the cable, the RaspberryPi and my desktop PC are all connected at 1gb/s.

  • The topography is as follows, DesktopPc> Access point (Tp-Link Archer C9)> switch (Netgear GS305)> RaspberryPi3 - with this config I can only get 100mb/s (10-11Mb/s) throughput.
  • If I take the Gs305 out of the path, so DesktopPc> Access point> RaspberryPi3 - I now get get 1000mb/s (70-108Mb/s) throughput.

So this demonstrates there is nothing wrong with the ethernet cable/s from the PC to the access point and from that to the Pi. So WTF is the GS305 dropping the connection speed? Just to verfy if my old 305 was faulty oir not, I went a bought 2 more switches. A Tp-link 5-port switch and another GS305 (this was a v3). The Tpilink connects at gigabit speed but only does 60-70Mb/s and the 'new' GS305 is behaving exactly as my old GS305 did at 10-11Mb/s, so what the actual F!

And just for sh*ts and giggles I checked to see if I could update the firmware, but both my old 305 and the new 305v3 are unmanaged so DO-NOT present an IP address on the network, so CANNOT be updated.

More than strange. Do he Archer P9 and the RaspberryPi3 indicate GbE link speeds?

      Evening
Correct as evidenced by the test mentioned in the OP, where I plugged the Pi direct into the Tp-link.

In the meantime I found another old netgear switch (GS605), I will insert that in place of the Tp-Link and see what results I get.

  • So I have narrowed bown part of the problem to some sort of incompatibilty between the Tp-Link router and the GS305. After I replaced the TP-link with with an old GS605 that I found in a box, that appeared to resolve the speed downlocking.

But that has now highlighted another issue where once I kick off a transfer, the speed is solid at 118mb/s for above 5-6 second it then drops to the floor, sometimes to 0 and then bounced upand downbtween 0-80mb/s.

So the first thing I am going to do is get a long ether net cable so I can isolate parts of the LAN one at a time to try and isolate whats causing the above speed ping-pong.
