why does FS105 have / need an IP address

newbie query

have a FS105 and it has an IP address

why does this switch need an IP address?

thank you

  • thanks

am on Mac OS El Capitan

tried ipconfig but I guess the Mac version does not include /all

router is leased from Whidbey Tel and they do permit end users to log in to the router

    but

    riddle is solved

I crawled up into the ceiling, unstrapped the ADT Pulse Gateway, turned it over, and what did I find

in teeny tiny letters "by Netgear of California" with a MAC address that matches

    so

when Fing, etc report IP and MAC by Netgear, they are correct

they are referring to the ADT Pulse device, NOT the Netgear switch

so riddle is solved, thank you all

    Hello engravosurus,

    Welcome to the community!

The FS105 is only a pass-through switch therefore,  it does not need an IP. It could be that the IP address that you are seeing is assigned to the first device connected to it. All it does is to forward packets by remembering MAC addresses of the devices which transmit and request packets. For more information, please click here

I hope the information helps if you have more questions the community is happy to help.

    Thanks,

        Hi engravosaurus,

Is the Linksys switch a manageable switch?  If yes, then possibly the IP address you see belongs to the Linksys switch.

        Regards,
