XS508M Crashed. No Longer Have Any Confidence in This Device

My XS508M stopped working whilst I was away for work which is when I need my office network working reliably so caused me a lot of issues.

Basically I use this as my main switch. My WAN router and my NAS (which hosts a number of key services) connect to it. All other switches, servers and clients are off that switch, so the loss of that switch meant all other LAN traffic stopped, as well as no incoming internet traffic which was what knackered me.

When I returned and started my investigation, I was careful not to do anything that might lose the root cause so I fired up a laptop (no DHCP), set a static IP and then tried to connect to different appliances/devices.

It was clear the XS508M was dead, anything connected to it was down and as it is unmanaged, nothing else I could do but unplugging/reconnected the AC lead, which immediately resulted in the entire LAN coming back to life and being contactable from the WAN once more.

Since it is unmanaged I obviously cannot get any logs, cannot upgrade/downgrade the FW, what else can I do to determine the cause?

Has anyone has this with a XS508M? Is this an unreliable switch?

If it is not totally reliable, I will need to replace it, what a waste of money. What else should I use?

It happened again and my whole LAN went down again.

It's unreliable and since it's a dumb switch with no configurable options there's nothing I can do to resolve this, its useless to me if it's not reliable.

I'm swapping it out and the replacement should arrive tomorrow.... this time NOT made by Netgear.

Possible you may have a faulty unit. You should make contact with NG support and ask about RMA options. Ask them about a cross shipping RMA. Well worth checking to this to see if unit is just faulty. My XS505M has been solid for past few years since getting it. All ports and the SFP are used for my needs.

Netgear does highly belief and trust in the quality of these switches. Otherwise, they would never offer a limited lifetime warranty

Warranty for products with ProSAFE Limited Lifetime Warranty, except for Fully Managed Switches, ends five years after the product is listed as NETGEAR Business Products "End of Life" or EOL. As of today, only the XS505M are listed, probably due to lack of demand.

All the similar aged switches operated here 24*7, are still in service, and operating trouble-free daily:

    XS505M 5-Port 10-Gigabit/Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch with SFP+ Port

    XS508M 8-Port 10-Gigabit/Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch with SFP+ Port
    GS110MX 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch with 2-Port 10G/Multi-Gig Uplinks (GS110MX)

GS110EMX 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Plus Switch with 2-Port 10G/Multi-Gig Uplinks

MS510TX 8-Port Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Pro Switch with 10G Copper and SFP+ Ports
MS510TXPP 8-Port PoE+ Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Pro Switch with 10G Copper and SFP+ Ports

XS724EM 24-Port 10-Gigabit/Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Plus Switch with 2 SFP+ Ports, Rackmount

All these are now eight or more years old, and still reliable workers.

What is all connected to the switch?

What kind of CAT# LAN cable are you using? CAT6A STP is recommended.

What is the brand and model# of the host router and NAS you have connected to it?

Do LEDs show anything when this happens?

What other switches do you have connected down stream from the XS switch?

What is happening when the switch seems to fail?

    Using the SFP port any?

What happens if you connect your NAS to the host router and some other devices to the host router and then try the XS switch alone with some other devices connected to it? See if the switch works alone with out all other switches connected to it for a time.

I have had a 505M for past couple of years and it's never failed. Other GS110MX and GS308 series switches down stream from the XS. Dish Hopper system and Orbi system connected to the XS switch on one segment from the host router. A GS series switch connected on a different segment behind the host router that services my main home network along with NAS.
