SRX5308 and DSL on WAN2

Posted to the correct forum..... :-)

I am trying to use a Verizion DSL modem on WAN2 for rollover when my WAN 1 cable modem goes down. The DSL modem is a Netgear DM111PSPv2. It works fine in Gateway mode when connected to a laptop, etc. (So I know the account name and password are correct). Speed is 1.5 down and .5 up. The router is set for rollover to WAN2, etc.

I have configured the DSL modem for bridge mode (or, as they call it "modem only") and plugged it into WAN 2. Set for PPoE and entered the correct login and password. The modem has it's sync light on steady... so I know it isn't the DSL side of things.

I have tried everything I can think of .... rebooted the modem, the router, etc. I just can't get the WAN 2 port to go "green". The setup always shows it as down. I did the auto configure on the router and it finds it correctly as PPoE......

What am I missing? This should be a no brainer...... right? There must be something I am not doing correctly.

Any and all advice and help is appreciated.

Charlie

  • sounds like authentication issues.

did you test with DM111P in RFC bridge and hook up PC directly and do PPP dial up make sure it works that way.
  • Thanks June,

I think that's what I said I did in my original post. It works just fine when connected to a PC, in "modem-router" mode (WAN access is perfect and fast). In "modem only" or bridge mode, I was able to connect to a home router (Netgear WNDR 3700) and have it bring the WAN up perfectly. So, I don't see how this could be an authentication issue (account and password are working properly).

In rollover mode, should WAN2 always be up and show green even if WAN 1 is up?

    Any other suggestions or ideas?

Was not exactly... PPP dial up on PC while RFC bridge

My bad that did not clear the information

if DM111P was on RFC bridge in this setup and works then contact support for issues on SRX5308
  • OK . . . . thanks. The device has extended support ... but I usually get better help on the forums.

Anyone else out there on the forum????
  • The WAN2 link will show DOWN whenever WAN1 (primary) is up when in Rollover mode. This is normal behavior.
  • Outstanding!! I knew it had to be a simple answer!

So, just to be sure..... As long as WAN1 is up (and "green"), WAN2 will show as "down" and "yellow". Right?

That should be very easy to test. All I would need to do is unplug the WAN1 cable or turn off the WAN1 modem.....and WAN2 should come "up" and go green...... Correct? Is there any other way to test WAN2 in rollover mode? Can I change the mode to see both come up?

Thanks again. You saved me a bunch of heartache and time. This was/is driving me nuts.

  • Unplug the cable to WAN ports to test . It will take up to 2mim to roll over
  • Yes, just make sure that you have a valid failover test (i.e pinging ISP DNS server) setup.
  • adit,

Rollover works well now. When WAN 1 failed the other day our DSL kicked in perfectly. DDNS made sure our local Exchange kept working as needed.

However, when the WAN1 came back up, the router never switched back from WAN2 to WAN1. After 20 minutes, I manually rebooted the router to get it back to using WAN1. I am using the default method of checking for WAN failure.

Why does this happen and how can we make sure the router switches back to WAN1 when it is up. In our case WAN 1 connection is about 5 times faster than what we have on WAN 2.

    Thanks again.
