Nighthawk mesh slow speed

I have installed a new nighthawk WiFi 6 mesh router with 1 satellite. I am getting great speed on speed test from the fiber, but the WiFi speeds SUCK. when I look at the network map, everything seems to be connecting to the satellite and nothing to the router. See picture file. How do I get the router to share the load?

    Hello Spydrjon,

Welcome to the community!  Ultimately the devices will decide which to connect to based off of the strongest WiFi signal. May you try moving the satellite to a further location and let us know if there are any improvements.

I have been having the exact same problem. Support can’t replicate it and had been no help.

I am getting 96Mbps for the router wired, but on 8-12 Mbps from the wireless. That’s with both the satellite wired and wireless. In testing my device was about 2 ft from the satellite with clear line of sight. Additionally I’m only getting 10-15Mbps from the router with the same 2ft line of site test.

I have the same issue. I have a FireTV stick ave Echo Show within 5 feet of the router yet they are connecting to the satellite that is 30 feet away. I have 2 cameras, 3 plugs, another FireTV stick, and a lightbulb 10-12 feet from the router that are also connecting to the satellite that is 30 feet across the house.

I have a gig service. When I test the ethernet wired speed, it is 655Mbps. When I speed test right next to it. I get 547 Mbps. But as I walk away, speed drops with every oot distance. I used to have an standard gig router from netgear when I had 300 Mbps speed and 20 feet away I use to get the same speed as next to the router.

I tried to select my model in the pulldown but it's not in the list.  Not a good start, Netgear.  I have a Router & Satellite, the package is marked AX1800 MR62, and on the bottom of the box the sticker says *MK62-100NAS*.  The router is an MR60, the satellite is an MS60.

For the devices in the back of my house near the satellite, I get slow speeds, excessive buffering during streaming, etc. When my phone is connected to the satellite, my internet speed as measured by the app is 226 Mbps download/12.06 Mbps upload.  BUT if I measure using an internet browser speed test (speedtest.net) from my computer, I get only 12.0 Mbps download/11.1 Mbps upload.

I was having buffering issues this afternoon, so I unplugged the satellite and surprise!  It started working better.  (But I lost some smart switches in my garage because they're too far from the router.)

I bought this system last August.  It's behaved like this on an off the whole time.  I thought it was my Roku stick but apparently it's the Mesh.

        Any ideas?

  • Having the same problem... With my old router I was getting consistent speeds over 900mbps when wired and around 4-500mbps when on wifi. Even with my wifi6 compatible computer i get 20mbps for wifi and am lucky to get 150mbps connected with ethernet. debating on returning it as well if this cant be sorted. My phones wifi gets better speeds than my computers hard wire.

      Customer Support,

I am having the same issue as others. When I connect directly to modem/wifi router provided by my ISP then speed is over 300MBPS downloads/uploads. As soon I connect Mesh router with cat 5.e ethernet cable the speed drops to 93MBPS. Though speed test using Nighthawk App in my phone, it shows expected speed of 300MBPS but none of my devices, computer, phone, security camera, etc. are getting close to 300mbps speed. BTW, the firmware is updated recently to v1.1.6.122

If I am reading this correctly, you are connecting the Nighthawk router via ethernet to your ISP router. I would suggest shutting down the wireless services on you ISP router when doing this to eleminate any interference in the wireless signals. Before connecting the Nighthawk, I would take a laptop and connect it to the ISP ethernet port and do a hardwired speed test. Let's say you have 1 Gig comming down to that port. Now, connect the Nighthawk router and do a wireless speed test with your phone. If you have a Wi-Fi 6 phone, you should get between 500 and 800 Mbps. Yes, you lose at least 20% off the bat with the best phone. If you have a wifi 5 phone you will get around 300 Mbps, or maybe up to 500 Mbps. If you have satellite sysyems, that reduces your speed even further. I use the Nighthawk as the primary unit being a simple cable modem. On the main router, I get 800 Mbps with my Wi-Fi 6 phone. But I only get around 300 - 500 Mbps behind the meshed satellite units.
  • I read you issue very carefully. Actually I have already face this problem so many time with different routers. I suggest you to do follow some key points. Place your router at the center of your working place or home. You should make sure to keep away all electrical devices form your Wi-Fi router. Call your internet service provider and make sure to have the same internet desire plan. Sometime our other electrical gadgets such as microwave or Bluetooth devices operated on the same frequency as our router

  • I am having the exact same issue.  I installed the router yesterday an it started off great.  Speeds were fast, now last night and all day i am getting around 10 mbps instead of the 200 mbps I should be getting.  Upload is fine.  No settings were changed it doesn't make sense.  Firmware is up to date.

  • Same problem here.  MK-63 wifi 6 router with 2 satellites.  I'm getting 230-250Mbps at the router and 70-100Mbps on all my wifi devices.  Also some 5G devices connect on the 2G band.  So basically it slowed down all my devices that did not have a problem and only marginally improved the devices in the remote corners of my home.  I'm returning it tomorrow.

  • Fixed the issue with the satellite that was limiting itself to 100 Mbps. Logged in a ticket with Netgear and also found a bad jumper going from the satellite device to the 1 Gig switch. I bought 15 Cat 6 jumpers for this upgrade and one was not working correctly. Not 100 % sure if the jumper by itself was the whole problem, because I had previously tested the Ethernet port of the satellite independently with a separate cable. But in any case, both satellites are now running at 1 Gig speeds

I have 200mb comcast connection.  Got the nighthawk mesh wifi 6 system from costco with 1 router and 2 satellites.  Right in front of the router gives me 240mb second.  Ethernet moms computer gives 240mb also no issues.  I get about 5-10mb in my parents bedroom.  But afetr connect a satellite I get about 90mb.  And 90 in my garage.  Only my bedroom and my guest room get about 60 mb.  Rest of the house about 150mb on my motorola z3 play and about 30 more on my parents iphone xs max.  Except the netgear nighthawk app says 240mb.  Every other app says 140mb.  But no issues with ethernet and right in front of the router.

  • I have a Gig service and on line I am getting min of 850 Mbps. When I connect myself to the base when I am next to it it drops to 400 Mbps but as I walk away with speed test, it drops tremendously. With my old Netgear gig router I use to have 300 Mbps speed and 15 feet away I would get the same speed. With this one, there is no device that even come near 500Mbps with 6 feet away.

Similar issue here.   Yesterday morning I was getting speedtests of between 9mbps and 30mbps.  All streaming services were freezing, buffering, etc...  Internet was basically useless.  Spectrum sent out a tech who spent an hour going over everything and didn't find anything.  When he connected his test gear directly to the modem he was getting a solid and consistent 235mbps.  He then connected the Netgear MR60 to the modem and connected his tester hardwired to the MR60.  He could not get anything above 30mbps.  Tried again with a different cable and same result.

Wifi speed tests at this time were between 20 and 80mbps.

I bought this system for a new house thinking it would be a huge improvement over my older Google puck mesh router (I only had the router and no satellites so I figured the Nighthawk with its router and two satellites would cover my new house better).  I also liked that the Nighthawk had a web interface unlike the Google.

Bottom line, my direct wired speed through the router tops out at 30mbps.  Wifi jumps up and down between 9 and 90mbps.

I'm still within my return period at Costco but I threw out the box and all the packing materials.  I put in a support ticket with Netgear so hopefully they can solve this.

BTW, I previously put in a ticket with them for something else.  The guy on the phone couldn't figure out how to fix that problem, said he'd research it and call me back.  Almost 3 weeks later and still waiting for that call.....   Let's just say I'm not impressed with Netgear's support so far.

As for the google mesh router, it had very limited management options but it just worked.  Never had any issues with it.  DL speeds were always solid via wireless and hardwired.

I have purchased AX1800 Wi Fi 6 Netgear Mesh router.  The connection speed on the satellites is less than 10mpbs.  I have 200 Mbps speed from my ISP.  When i opened the ticket with Netgear Tech support, they asked me return it and get a replaceement from the store. I got a new one last night and still see the smae issue.  This is very disappointing afte spending $250+ on a router.

  • Hello,

I have a similar problem as others have mentioned.  I'm using an MK63S Mesh System with two satelites.  My Nighthawk app and my ISP's tests show 480 MB/s (I'm only paying them for 400) at the router, but a Speedtest on my PC shows <180.  I'm upstairs from the router, running an 3' ethernet cable from the Satelite to my PC.

I've gone as far as upgrading the ethernet cable and installing a new Gigabit Network Adapter card, as well as trying a 1300 MB/s Wireless USB WiFi Adapter.  Neither solution has improved the test speeds beyond 180 MB/s.  I'm tired of throwing money at this problem.  Please help.

    Thanks

Same.  I should have returned this thing months ago when I first started having problems with it, which was the very first day I bought it.  It has been a monumental piece of junk.

Current problem is what has been reported on this thread.   I previously had 200mb speeds from my ISP.  The MK63 was mostly stable after updating and downgrading the firmware a million times and after months of troubleshooting and being stuck at 80mb, it finally started providing up to 200mb.

Yesterday I upgraded to a 400mb plan.  I ran a speedtest from my laptop and was still getting around 180mb.  I then logged into the MK63's router through its web interface and tried a speedtest there and it hit 400mb.  Tried again on my laptop which is connected via 5G and is wifi 6 enabled and again got just under 200.  I then tried on my desktop which is physically connected by wire to one of the satellites and it's getting 400mb.    I then tried a few other devices that are connected via wireless and none of them are getting over 200mb.  But the router itself and the PC that's hardwired to a satellite are fine.

Basically, none of my wireless devices are getting more than 200mb from this piece of junk system.  Is wifi somehow capped to 200mb on this product?  Because that's what it seems like.

Has a full power OFF of the ISP Modem and MESH system for 1 minute or longer then back ON been perfomed?

  • Wireless and hardwired speeds. Provisioned for 400 Mbps down 20 Mbps UP from Isp. Get full speed hardwire to modem and router. However wirelessly getting 67 Mbps from router to mutiple devices and 100 Mbps to satelites wired and hard wire a little less. Only had the system hooked up for 6 days have made multiple calls and tickets. Have reset and resetup multiple times. Firmware updated but still no solution.

    • What channels are you using? Auto? Try Auto and 48 on 5Ghz. Or try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming if seen on the MR, and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

If you read my previous posts, there appears to be an issue with the underlying network stack on these MS60 devices, which Netgear support / engineering refuse to recognize.

How I was able to get past the ~70 Mbps cap with wired backhaul was to force WiFi backhaul, and then revert back to wired backhaul.

On my MS60, it wasn't as simple as just unplugging the network cable from the MS60 and rebooting (pulling the power cable).

Had to perform multiple factory resets, and 30:30:30 resets (using a paperclip, press the reset button and hold it for 30 secs, while still pressing the reset button with the paperclip, remove the power for 30 secs, while still holding the reset button with the paperclip plug the power back in and wait for 30 secs, then release paperclip) on the MR60 AND MS60 to get them to connect via WiFi backhaul.

Once the MS60 connected to the MR60 via WiFi backhaul .. like magic .. there was no longer a ~70 Mbps cap for devices connected to the MS60.

I then rebooted my switch - just to be safe - plugged in the network cable to the MS60 .. verified the connection to the MR60 via wired backhaul was 1000 Mbps .. and problem solved i.e. devices connected to the MS60 via WiFi are connecting at 1Gbps speeds now without issue.

  • How do you manually change the wireless channels on the  MR60 and each satelite??

    • You can change channels on the MR under Basic Tab/Wireless settings. This sets the MR and the MS as well.
