High peaks latency Orbi RBR750

Hello Everybody,

I want your advice fo what kind of settings I can tweak in my Orbi RBR750 as I'm experiencing a high latency ping peaks after every certain amount of seconds.

Let me give a little background, recently I changed my ISP provider where they gave me the ONT and I was able to set it up as bridge mode and use my Orbi system as a main router, although I have some knowledge on network, I'm not a network admin or have the full picture, but I have seen a very high peaks of latency while playing videogames, while I was researching I found that every certain time I get those peaks, as a test I did a ping to Google DNS server 8.8.8.8 and this is the result I'm seeing:

Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=98ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=121ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=119

As you can see normally the milliseconds stays in 40's but suddenly it has peaks as shown above 98ms, 121ms

After cancelling the ping the results are similar to this:

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 38ms, Maximum = 145ms, Average = 44ms

With my previous ISP I didn't have this kind of issues, but I have to say that my previous ISP ONT was used as a main router as I didn't have the PPPoE credentials to make the orbi the main router, with this new provider I have the access to the PPPoE credentials and I was able to set the Orbi as the main router.

With that being said, I'm thinking that probably I'm missing a configuration that probably the ONT has that could resolve the problem, but like I said before, I have some network knowledge but there are settings in the router that I don't really know what they area for, this is affecting online gaming, where I'm stable between 60-70ms and it suddenly has a peak to 120ms making games hard to play.

Do you know of any setting that I could tweak and play with it and see if that helps to improve this situation? or do you think this is an issue from the ISP itself?

Thanks for the help in advance

  • Try pinging the same serices or different DNS serivces to compare results with a PC directly connected to the ONT with out the RBR being online.

Are other devices online when your pinging. Try to ping with out other devices being online as well.

Trun OFF all RBS as well prior to pinging.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

    Who is the ISP?
Do they offer native IPv6 support?
    Is IPv6 enabled?

Is the RBR using auto detected ISP DNS or custom DNS on the RBR?

If prior ISP and this Orbi system didn't have this issue and you changed ISP and now see this, would be something this new ISP maybe should take a look at.

  • Hi FURRYe38

    As per your questions:

    Firmware: 7.2.7.15

Mfr and model from ISP: ZTE F670l

ISP: This is from Mexico, this is called Telmex

IPv6 not enabled in Orbi, but I'm not pretty sure, but when configuring the WAN in the ISP ONT, I see they have a non editable value for the IP version and it has IPv4/v6 selected.

DNS is in auto-detect, this is assigned by the ISP

Yesterday I tried few of the suggested things, this is what I did:

    1. Change cable (I have a cat8 but changed to cat6) -> Same behavior
    2. Tested directly from cable in the netgear orbi -> Same behavior
    3. Connected to ISP ONT -> Issue is not happening

After playing with some configurations I wasn't able to figure out why I get those peaks in Orbi Router but not in the ISP ONT,  based on a tutorial document how to put on bridge mode the ISP ONT, you have to enable VLAN and put certain VLAN, I'm not pretty sure if that could be the path to follow for troubleshooting, but I saw orbi has an option for VLAN, when I go there and enable VLAN, it appears the same VLAN ID from the ISP, but when I apply the settings I can't connect to the orbi not even the configuration through orbilogin.com and I don't have other choice than reset the orbi.

I'm almost sure (maybe I'm wrong), that I have to set a value from the ONT into ORBI, but I'm missing this one.

I hope you guys can bring more light into this issue :D

  • Hi FURRYe38

    Firmware: 7.2.7.15

Man and model ISP: Modem  ZTE F670l

ISP: Is from Mexico, is called Telmex

IpV6 disabled in orbi, but I'm not totally sure seems accept ipv6, because WAN setup in ISP ONT is setup with a non-editable dropdown with ipv4/v6 selected.

    RBR auto detects ISP DNS.

    What I did yesterday was:

Change ethernet cable from cat8 to cat6 -> same result
Do the ping from Orbi router -> same result
Do the ping from the ISP ONT -> not happening

I did a lot of configurations yesterday with no luck, I'm almost sure that I'm missing a setting from the ONT that I have to setup in Orbi.

    I noticed the following:

To put the ONT into bridge mode, you have to enable VLAN and set a VLAN ID, If I remove that, it doesn't work the internet using the Orbi
Orbi has an option for VLAN, where you enable it and it retrieve the same values from the ONT VLAN, but when I apply the changes internet doesn't work and I can't connect anymore to the orbi configuration site even using orbilogin.com, I ended up by reset orbi

After many attempts yesterday and today, I'm not sure if that is the path that I have to follow, but I hope this can bring you an idea.

OK so seems like something happening with the Orbi system in router modem with the ONT. Your XTE is a gateway ONT so there is wifi and router there.

I see your not getting high pings direct behind the gateway.

Something to try, Use the ONE in router mode, disable wifi, then connect the RBR to the gateway and configure AP mode on the RBR: https://community.netgear.com/kb/en-orbi-knowledge-sharing/static-ip-address-configuration-for-ap-mode/2456256
