I was looking for info about if I can use two Orbi RBS350 satellites to an Orbi RBR750 router

Hi!

I just saw this chatt when I was looking for info about if I can use two Orbi RBS350 satellites to an Orbi RBR750 router, I chatted with Netgear and got the answer that it is not possible, but now I see that you seem to use this particular combination.? Have you needed to modify the router or satellites for it to work together or do they work together as they are? I start to think that the customer service didn't know what they was talking about.!

  • The confusion is understandable.  At one time, Netgear sold the RBK653 package consisting of one RBR750 router plus two RBS350 satellites. https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK653/RBK653_DS.pdf

This package no longer appears on the web site under "Whole Home Mesh WiFi", so it must not have been popular.

At the same time, Netgear publishes a Knowledge Base article showing which satellites are compatible with each router:

    https://kb.netgear.com/000065169/Which-Orbi-routers-and-satellites-are-compatible

This article clearly shows the RBS350 as "compatible" with a footnote that performance is lower than it would be with RBS750 satellites.

This is because the RBS350 being a dual band product rather than a tri band product means that the satellites use the single 5G radio for both user devices and for communication with the router, resulting in lower performance for WiFi devices.

This has created confusion for customers because while the RBR750 router itself now has new firmware, the RBR750 in this package still shows the older firmware as being the current release:

    https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbk653#download

Can customers upgrade the router to the new firmware?  (or not?) has been asked a number of times.

Ok, so if I understand you correctly, I can as I thought use these together but the satellites will be limited to their own maximum capacity and the router will be limited to its own maximum capacity, right? For example, the devices that are connected to the satellites get the maximum capacity for the RBS350 and the devices that are connected to the router will get the RBR750 maximum capacity? Am I thinking right here?

The thing is that I at this moment have an RBR353 system but got an RBR750 router from a friend, he needed to buy an extra satellite and at that time it was cheaper to buy a package with one router and one satellite.

I don't fully understand this with the update, can it create problems if I update the RBR750 router or if it's all ready have the latest firmware? Don't know if it has any significance but I don't know the firmware version of the router but I think it has the latest version doe it is produced in 2023 and the RBS350 has firmware version V4.4.1.29.

Does it matter that the router has tri-band and the satellites have duo..? I mean the communication should work anyway since the router has the higher standard of those two, right?

  • Hello again!

I have some additional thoughts that I hope someone in the forum can give me some clarity on, I am going to replace my Orbi RBR350-router with an Orbi RBR750-router in a week or so and are not entirely sure about how to do it so what i wondering is if I can pre-install FW v4.6.14.3 (which I understand is the only FW that works on this combination) on my new RBR750 router right now and then install the same FW on the RBS350 satellites when I replace the router?

Another thing I'm wondering about is if I can convert my RBR350-router to a satellite when I start using the RBR750-router and if the RBR750-router also works as a modem? (The only information i find is that the model CBR750 can act as a modem and router at the same time).

Today I don't have a modem, my RBR350-router are directly connected to my incoming fiber socket, everything works as it should and I seem to be protected by WPA2_P but I now get a little unsure if my connection and my devices really are completely protected when I am connected to the router?

No. Orbi routers cannot be converted to satellites.  It is part of the fundamental product design.  With a fiber internet connection, there is no modem. (Modems are for DSL or cable internet.)  Router connected directly to fiber ONT is correct.

The WPA2 WiFi security is also correct.

Ok, thanks for the quick respons.!🙂

Is it possible to use the router for something else if I connect it by a networkcable from the router?

      Yes. That would be recommended.

There is a built in firewall on all ng routers that works automatically to protect you.
Users can also check into a Armor subscription if you think you want more security.

  • Sorry for all the questions but it's getting closer to change my system now and wondering if there is a guide on how and in which order I shall install the new system.

So I'm going to replace my rbr350 router with an rbr750 router and use my rbr350-router as an AP, and that my current satellites will continue to be used, I know which FW I'm going to use, but does the FW have to be installed on the AP as well or does it follow the new router's settings?

  • I'm about to install FW on the satellites now but get "your connection is not private" and can't get any further when I answer the security questions.. What do I do now?

What browser are you using? Try MS Edge or Firefox or Opera.

Choose the Accept or any continue buttons seen for the private message. It's ok to continue here.

You need to update the RBS first, then RBR lastly in this order.

Ok, thanks.! The router upgraded to FW v4.6.14.3 automatically when I installed it from the box.. So I now have a network cable from the router to a switch and my computer on one port and one satellite on one port.. Is it possible to install FW on the satellite that way? If I'm right the computer and the satellite can  communicate without that the router getting involved that way, right?

  • Everything works fine, now I just have to convert the router to AP.!😀
