Please navigate to the link below for step-by-step instructions on how to update your Orbi model system::

Be sure to update the RBS FIRST, then the RBR lastly.

I HIGHLY recommend after the FW is loaded on the system and it's back to ready, power OFF all Orbi units and the ISP modem/ONT for 1 minute. Then back ON with the ISP modem/ONT first, then RBR then RBS.

The best advise we can give people is to start a new config, power on one RBS and wait for some SOLID light or most often blue or magenta. And then add the RBS WIRELESSLY via the Web UI. Power off the RBS. Then rinse and repeat with any additional RBS(s). Pair RBS one at a time even if you have more than one. For ethernet connected RBS, after things come up wirelessly, you can move to wired backhaul but don't start with wired backhaul for those RBS that are ethernet connected. Wirelessly connect and sync RBS first before ethernet connecting RBS.

NOTE: Orbi app or the routers web page may not report seeing new FW updates. NG may not push this to there auto update services immediately and may activate the newer FW update being seen on there auto update services at a later time. User will have the choice to manually update if you want too.

NOTE: The Disable Auto Update feature only prevents ANY new FW from being installed if available. This does NOT prevent the system from checking NG services to see if new FW is available. If new FW is available, this will be displayed as a notification to the user on the RBRs web page only. It will be up to the user to upgrade FW or not.

A factory reset maybe needed if problems are encountered after the FW update:

https://kb.netgear.com/31486/How-do-I-reset-my-Orbi-system-to-factory-default-settings

NOTE: Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200

  • Hi

Can you comment on how this was tested compared to past releases? Was there a beta program before it was released? Or only internal testing?

    Thanks

    • I wish. Ya, no beta testing.

I've been testing this same version on my 850 series and haven't seen any issues. Feels solid and stable. RBS are wireless connected. Will be checking on ethernet BH this week. Orbi app is working for me as well. Streaming is good as too. Over all, seems pretty good.

I did manually loaded my system, power cycled then factory reset and setup from scratch to ensure I got a clean setup.

I believe is same code base and the 850 and 960 series so should be good. Hasn't been lots of posts regarding bad operation yet.

  • Updated from 7.2.6.31 to this new 7.2.7.15 without any issues. All went smoothly and speeds all seem normal.

Can confirm that the Firmware Update function may not detect this new firmware, even when the Auto Firmware Update feature is Enabled.  It would be SO helpful if Netgear published documentation on how the firmware update process functions.  Like, what does "rolling out" mean?

I will do a manual update today, since this RBR750 does not detect the new firmware.

  • Just curious, if anyone with a 750 series system has noticed that there RBS750 reports a QV after the system is updated then check again for a FW update, on this page, does the RBS750 model string appear correctly for your RBS?

  • I have installed this new firmware, so far is working fine.

First updated satellites as per the recommendation (one by one), at the end I updated the router. All was updated correctly and I had internet once the router rebooted from the FW update. After that I followed the suggestion of turn off satellites, then router and at the end the ISP modem for 1 minute. After that I started the ISP modem, then the router and at the end the satellites, firstly I had issues with an error with my devices won't connect, I restarted again with 1 satellite connected and now is up and running. Let's see how it behaves this time, I had FW 7.2.6.21 because 7.2.6.31 had many issues.

I hope all bug fixes and connectivity issues are addressed in this Firmware!

Thanks for letting us know and the feedback.

Please make a new backup configuration to file for this new FW version.

Let us know if you see anything. My 850 series using same version has been online since 2/25 and has been working great. Hope same for yours.

I have manually upgraded both the RBS750 satellites, and after completion the RBR750 router.

        No errors reported.

I noticed that my satellite-2 is checking for connection to the router (white lights blinking, and then blue lights blinking).

This happens several times a day. With the v7.2.6.21 the satellite-2 did not have this 'strange' behavior. The satellite-1 does not have this 'strange' behavior.

Today I have download once again the firmware v7.2.7.15 zip file and I have upgraded once more the satellite-2.

Let's see if this brings any improvement.

Did anyone else encounter this behavior?

        Regards, Andre

  • Earlier, I tried to do manual updates both of my wifi connected satellites (753) with my local downloaded https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK752/RBS750-V7.2.7.15.zip's extracted *.chk file. Only one of the satellites got updated. Other didn't update. I had to retry for that the older firmware satellite. Does it not do update at the same time? All are now updated and working. It's sure slow and tedious to do this since I have to do update each device.

FYI...I'm looking for updated documentation.  If there isn't any, then just say so because what's at that link is the OG User Manual prior to the firmware-supplied updates.

Would you please update the user documentation for the past 2 firmware updates?

Alas, Netgear's Community Forum is exactly that: a web site where customers talk about products, ask questions, and suggest solutions.  The only Netgear employees involved with the forum are moderators tasked with keeping the forum running.  Software engineers, technical writers, and support staff are doing whatever tasks have been assigned to them.

I, also, would like to think that Netgear management places enough value on user documentation to assign people to update the User Manuals when substantial changes are made to product capabilities (such as the IoT WiFi capability, automatic firmware update option, etc.).  It might be an interesting exercise to compare Netgear's User Guides against those of other vendors (Amazon eero, Asus, Google, TP-Link, Ubiquiti, etc.) Do they all update User Guides when new firmware is released?  (Do they actually make substantial changes to their product capabilities that would require new documentation?)

      Anyway, "preaching to the choir."

  • I've given up on 7.2.7.15 completely as unstable in almost a timed fashion - as in it worked for a time after restarting the router and then dropped out seemingly after the same period. The router seemed to be rebooting as the whole network SSID vanished for a time and the satellites all started blinking white trying to re-connect. Reverted to 7.2.6.21 and its stable again, Not sure when to dip in again with future updates...

Which model Orbi do you have?

What do you mean by unstable?

My 850 series ran great for 30 days on v.15 solid and stable. I also factory reset and setup from scratch with mine as well. Only issue that I can't test is native IPv6 which others report native IPv6 is broke.

Next time try a factory reset and setup from scratch to check for issues. This is mentioned in the 1st post in this thread.

I've got 750s. Unstable as in the entire SSID kept vanishing for up to 5 mins as if the router was rebooting... It was frankly unuseable. All I did was revert the firmware without doing anything else and its fine now.

  • Been having issues with my RBK753 system since installing this firmware. Previous version was rock-solid, but since installing this, I've experienced several instances where the Internet will slow to a crawl (a WiFi issue as speed tests on a wired device still show full fiber speeds), the WiFi network will just disappear for several minutes, satellites will suddenly reboot or disconnect from the mesh network... I've tried to power-cycle the network and reset router and satellites, but still experiencing problems.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 UTP is recommended.

How are you checking the speed? Wireless or ethernet PC?

How did you factory reset the router and satellites and setup from scratch? Using a PC and web browser or setup thru the Orbi app?

Is IPv6 enabled on the RBR?

Are you using ISP DNS or custom DNS?

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, IPv6, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, Traffic Meter.

Not sure which ONT Ting is using for our installs, but I hear it's a Calix GP1100X.

Using a Cable Matters CAT6 cable.

Checking the speed both wirelessly on iPhone/iPad and wired Mac.

Used a Mac/web browser to set up.

        IPv6 is enabled.

        Using Cloudflare and Google DNS.

Armor, Smart Parental Controls, Circle and Traffic Meter are all turned off.

Yeah, I'm ticked off, having same issue. Somehow, the auto install feature got enabled, not sure how. I'd installed Orbi app a while back to check it out instead of the web interface I've always used, I believe that may have reset it to auto install. I was on 3 versions back because I did not want to deal with lag, hangs and having to come back to this forum to see what the heck was going on with NetGear.

So now I'm back, complaining of slow internet speed, hangs. Using the debug page, I can see that the router is running 43% CPU load when on prior firmware that was less than 10% on regular basis. Also the web interface is now SLLOOOOOOWWWW. I can't believe the router and satellites actually auto updated correctly, they are all showing this updated firmware.

I so love to hate on Netgear but going into holiday weekend I can't deal with this right now.

Will a full reset fix this? Keep the firmware and just do a reset, name it the same with same password and everything will reconnect?

I hate Netgear, I really do. I loved our Orbi's until the 3rd or 4th firmware and until that last one from a few years back, was nothing but hell.
