Orbi AX4200 RBS750 satellite will only get 100Mbps on wired backhaul

Recently I rearranged my home network to wire in some devices and to add an ethernet backhaul. However, I am unable to get speeds above 100 Mbps from the satellite with ethernet backhaul.

Details are below. Even though the statistics panel says the connection is 1000MB down, I still only get <100 Mbps through the satellite. At first I suspected a cable issue (mix of cat5E & cat6), and tried numerous variations (such as bypassing the switch, disconnecting devices, etc). Any time the satellite was wired (even directly to the router via cat6), speeds were < 100 Mbps. The cables and switch themselves deliver correct speeds ( > 900 Mbps) without the satellite. Right now, all the devices I wanted wired are connected through the switch, and I am using wireless backhaul. It works wirelessly as is, however I should still obviously be able to get a functioning high speed ethernet backhaul.

Ideally my setup would be as follows -

ISP (Spectrum 1 Gbps) Modem > RBR750 > Netgear Switch GS305 > RBS750

from the RBR 750, there is also a wired PC

from the Switch, there is also a wired TV and AV receiver

from the RBS750, there is a wired PC

AX4200 purchased from Netgear in May 2022
Firmware is current (4.6.9.11_2.3.5)

The satellite is approximately 40 feet (and one floor down) from the router

Speed tests done on Ookla Speedtest.net
Wireless backhaul delivers correct wifi speeds (for example > 500 Mbps on iPhone)

The statistics panel says the satellite connection is 1000MB down

I performed a factory reset 3 times on the Orbi satellite and router and got the same results

  • Sounds like a possible faulty RBS that may need replacing if wired connections directly to the RBR are working and the wireless backhaul is working.

When you factory reset the RBR and RBS, did you let the setup wizard add the RBS during the setup process or did you add it later on using the sync buttons?

  • Sorry I missed this last reply.

I do understand all of the possible failure points with the cables and interfaces, however, the same cables and interfaces all provide full 1000Mbps when the satellite is removed from the setup.

I'm going to reach out to Netgear to try and get a replacement.

100MB is such a specific number that it almost always is caused by a failure of the Ethernet links to auto-negotiate a faster speed.

Satellites are portable. I would spend 10 minutes relocating the satellite to be in the same room as the router and using a couple of different Ethernet patch cords to connect it directly to the router.  No switches. No patch panels. No wall jacks. etc. etc.

The router web browser Advanced tab home page box "Show Statistics" page will display the speed that has been negotiated.  If two different cables give the same 100MB/Full result, then either the router or the satellite LAN port is bad.

I have tested the satellite with known working cat6 or cat5e cables with the same result. Sometimes the stats say 100Mbps, other times 1000Mbps; still, in either case, I only get <100Mbps. That said, now that there is new firmware, I will update and then try this one more time before trying to initiate a return.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

Is the RBS ethernet conected to the RBR or wirelessly?
If ethernet connected, are the RBS directly connected to the back of the RBR or is there a LAN switch in between?

Brand and model of switch if used please.

Im currently running this on my 7 series:

RBS ethernet connected. NG GS 10x series LAN switches in between.

I'm not sure how this got split off onto another thread, but I covered my issue and attempted remedies here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-WIFI-6-AX-AND-Wi-Fi-6E-AXE/Orbi-AX4200-RBS750-satellite-will-only-get-100Mbps-on-wired/m-p/2273141

Basically, any attempt to run a wired backhaul results in any device downstream from the satellite getting <100Mbps speeds, even though stats say 1000Mbps/full. With wireless backhaul, all equipment delivers expected speeds of ~1000Mbps. All cables and switches deliver ~1000Mbps when the satellite is not in the chain.

  • I had same problem with one of my RBS960. Throttled to just below 100M wired backhaul, and normal full speed without the cable. I was a Cat 5e so should have been fine, but ran a test with a long Cat 6 and it's now operating normally. My lesson learned is always start with the cables. Replacing everything in house with Cat 6 now. It can forever to diagnose these types of issues - cables are super easy to test.

Patch cables are super easy to swap out.  Cables embedded in the building structure can be swapped out using a long Cat6 patch cable (100' for $20 on Amazon).  Actually testing Ethernet cables requires very expensive test equipment.
