Recommendations when there is a power outage

Hi!

I'm looking for recommendations how to handle or what to do with orbi mesh when there is a power outage, let me explain the issue that I faced yesterday.

There was no power outage but I had to disconnect the orbi router and ISP modem due I had to some some work in the area where they are located, after connecting back the ISP modem and orbi router, all my devices were not able to connect, my android phone was saying that can't get an IP address or somethings failed to connect, all my devices were in the same situation and only few of them (around 10 of 38+) were able to connect. I followed the next troubleshooting options:

1. Turned off all the satellites, router and ISP modem, wait about 3 to 5 minutes and start them in the following order:

       1. ISP modem -> Waited about 4 minutes after plug into electricity.

       2. Orbi Router -> Waited about 5 minutes after LED turned off

       3. Start Satellites one by one until they turn off the lights

The issue was the same, I wasn't able to connect any of my devices

2. I connected different ports from the Orbi Router and ISP modem, same result.

3. Power off all devices and turn on orbi router only, then turn on ISP modem, same result.

After almost 3 hours trying to troubleshoot this, I ended up doing what I didn't want to do, I did a factory reset of the router and I had to configure again all the networks, this way the devices were able to connect BUT, now is behaving weird, I have 3 satellites, before all my IOT devices were distributed correctly between each satellite, now all of them are connected to orbi router.

I have restarted the mesh in the same order, first the router, then satellites and this is behaving the same way.

Then I tried to factory reset the satellites, but I'm not even sure if they did (I don't think so), the flashing light in the satellites were present when I pressed the reset button and I deleted manually from the orbi settings page http://orbilogin.com/, they were not appearing in the satellites, but as soon as I connected the satellites, they were added automatically to my orbi mesh system without having to go to the process of add the orbi satellites in the Android App.

The issue is still happening, all the IOT devices are connecting to orbi router and it has been very frustrating trying to make this work as it was before I disconnected the router, I have wasted at least 8 hours trying to fix these issues.

I'm wondering what is happening when you disconnect the orbi router and why is not that easy as just only connect it back and works normally as they should do, this happened to me few months ago when I really had an outage and I had the same issue, I had to reset everything and this is a total waste of time. I want to know how can avoid this in the future? why can't just simple reconnect the router and work as it was before disconnected

Orbi and Satellites version: 7.2.6.21 (I had 7.2.6.31 in the past and had a lot of issues, had to revert back to 7.2.6.21)

  • Yes, the recommended sequence is:

    • ISP modem first
    • Then router
    • Then satellites
    • Then user devices (This is often frustrating because user devices are spread all over the house and restarting them manually is often impractical - hard to reach, behind furniture, etc.)

Are all the major devices connected now?  and the principal "issue" is where IoT devices are connected?  If so, are the IoT devices working properly and the issue is that you want them connected differently?

      Hi!

All is connected and working now, but yeah is more related to how it was connected, basically having all the IOT devices connected to the router is weird as literally I have IOT devices next to a satellite, but it is connected to the router that is very far.

      Thank you

  • Something else to check into as well. Battery backup for the modem and main RBR.

  • Also, is there any change that I have to do in the ISP modem? such as disable DHCP and let the orbi router be the DHCP? or any special configuration on both devices (Orbi Router and ISP modem)

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 UTP is recommended.

If the ISP device is capable of DHCP, that indicates that it is a combination modem/router.  There are specific applications that can be affected by having "two routers" (do internet search for "Double NAT problems").  Users who find that they require these applications usually place their ISP device into "bridge" or "passthrough" mode.  If there have been no problems so far, this may not be an issue for you.

One technique that sometimes works with IoT devices is to power cycle them after the entire WiFi network is up and stable.  Most modern WiFi devices are programmed to continue searching for new WiFi connections all the time. (especially mobile devices such as phones, tablets, laptops).  There appear to be some devices which are programmed to stop searching after they make a connection.  Since the router begins advertising WiFi before the satellites, these devices may connect to the router and are no longer looking when the satellites become available.

        Thank you!

I have a mini no break in my satellites and orbi router, what I did is to turn off electricity at house, then wait few minutes until everything got disconnected, then start the electricity breakers and I started to see they were connecting to different satellites as it should supposed to do
