Lag and intemittent connection issues on new Orbi 370

Hello,

I recently upgraded my old Orbi system to a 370.    Since then, I have regular network interruption issues on most of my main Wi-Fi-enabled devices.   Sonos and Spectrum issues mostly.

Every hour or so, the internet connection will pause. This drives my wife crazy when she is watching one of her shows.  :P

My once-very-good internet connection to my laptop is sluggish and struggles to connect.

Can someone help?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Using ISP Detected DNS or custom DNS?

    Is IPv6 Enabled or disabled?

    How many RBS are deployed?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?

What is the distance between the router πŸ“‘ and satellite(s)πŸ›°οΈ? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR πŸ“‘ and RBS πŸ›°οΈ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.

Does this happen with the RBS turned OFF?

Does this happen with both wireless and wired devices?

What channel configurations are currently set on the router?

Try disabling the following and see:

Armor, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, Traffic Meter.

      Hi Furry,

Thanks for being willing to help.  :)

Here are the answers to your questions.

      1. Spectrum DOCSIS 3.1 Modem.  Model E31T2V1
      2.  I am updating all my Ethernet cables to CAT6A this week.
      3. Orbi is set to get DNS automatically from ISP
      4. IPv6 is disabled
      5. I have one Orbi router and two satellites.
      6. My house is 2600 sq feet
      7. I think they are about 30 feet apart from each other.  The main Orbi 371 is in my office (north center of house), one satellite is in LR (southeast room), and last satellite is in the hallway (west).  I put the last one there to plug one of my sono speakers into and provide coverage to my MBR and my wife's office.
      8. I have not yet tried to test with the satellites off.
      9. Both
      10. I have 2.4 and 5 enabled.
      11. Need to test the last part about the Armor and Traffic meter.  I don't use parental controls.

      I hope this all helps.

Try using custom IPv4 DNS like Cloudfare or Quad9.

What WiFi channel configurations are currently set on the router for 2.4 and 5Ghz?

  • Hi Furry,

Thanks for getting back to me.

How do I accomplish #1.   Would that require and add-on?

For #2, both are set to "Auto" and Preamble Mode/Auto.   I hope that is what you mean.

Log into the RBRs web page with a web browser and under Advanced Tab/Internet Setup and there is a section for DNS here. Set to Automatic by default, 2nd option down is manually input custom DNS addresses here.

Log into the RBRs web page with a web browser and under Basic Tab/Wireless Settings you'll see channel information for 2.4ghz and 5Ghz. What is seen here for the channels?

      No add-ons needed.

Just log into the web management page using your browser, and click on "internet".  Then select "Use These DNS Servers" in the "Domain Name Server (DNS) Address" section.

      • CloudFlare IPs: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
      • Quad9 IPs: 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112
      • Google IPs: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Note you can mix and match (for instance, using 1.1.1.1 for primary, and 8.8.8.8 for secondary).

Best to reboot the router after doing this.

While this could be the issue, it seems unlikely, since your old Orbi was likely using your ISP DNS.

What model Orbi did you have before?

Thanks.  I'll do that when I get back home later.

My previous Orbi was a series 2 but I can remember the exact one.

No. Just gathering some data. I am seeing high pings every hour or so with my 370 series in AP mode at the RBS. Could cause lag or intermittent connection at the RBS.

Not seeing any major pings at the RBR.

When you notice this lag or intermittent connection event, are the devices connected at the RBR or at the RBS?
