Rax80 reverts to factory settings on reboot

HI, I've seen a couple of posts about this, but am at my wit's end with regards to how to fix this issue, if it is even fixable.

Have a RAX80, currently on the latest firmware ( V1.0.3.102_1.0.48), though this issue also occured on the last firmware it was on, but I am unsure what version that might have been. Basically, everytime it reboots (such as when I updated the firmware), it seems to revert back to factory settings, so I have to run through set up each time. This also happens when the router is switched off and on again, for some reason it cannot seem to retain any of the settings, and acts like a new router everytime that happens.

Normally not a problem, as I generally don't switch off my router, but as I have it set to broadcast both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz as one SSID, it can cause issues when it resets, and working from home, I notice it a lot more these days.

Is there anything that can be done? Is it just an issue of waiting for a firmware update that might help solve it? I read a forum post about someone installing custom firmware on a different Netgear router that seemed to fix the problem, but there doesn't appear to be any custom firmware available for this particular router.

Never seem to have any luck with Netgear routers, should have just stuck with TP-Link like I usually do!

  • Oh, forgot to mention, I've tried the 30,30,30 reset option as apparently that has fixed the issue on some routers, but to no avail.

Might be related to the R7800 where some units use a Macronix NAND chip. There is currently no fix. Also, a 30-30-30 reset has no effect on ARM-based routers, only MIPS ones. If I was you I'd return it or do an RMA

Unfortunately had it just over a year.

Have you tried downgrading the firmare a version?

Sometimes the newer firmware introduces issues. This could be one.

Yeah, I reverted down to 1.0.3.88, still the same issue.

  • I'm also having this problem and cannot even find a way to contact Netgear directly. No warranty = "pay to talk to us" so I'll probably just buy a competitor's router and consider this experience "renting" a router that started acting up after 18 months.... about $22/month. I'm certainly not throwing another $50 to Netgear for "premium service" not knowing that the tech will solve the problem or just keep repeating "out of warranty" when I already paid $400 for the router. It's annoying to lose your settings but the QoS setup is particularly onerous in a home with WiFi speakers (but as far as I can tell, it's absolutely necessary to prioritize their traffic).
