Any update on 5Ghz Upload issue?

Hi everyone,

Yes, as of this evening 1/15/24 this issue is still present.  I have the same exact problem.  I have reinstalled the OS and I have performed a rollback.  I have performed numerous upload tests using Craigslist and another sites.

So, utilizing the 2.4 GHz signal there are no problems.  However, as soon as I switch over to the 5.0 GHz signal uploads fail.  Specifically, for me photo files.  I also tested my Outlook Email program, and the same issue persists.  If I try to send an email with a small (1.4 MB) photo it will fail using the 5.0 GHz signal, whereas with the 2.4 GHz signal the email goes through and it shows up in my "Sent" items folder.

This is one of the messages I will receive during an upload with the 5.0 signal "A socket error occurred during the upload test. A firewall could be blocking the connection, or the server might be having some issues. Please try again later."

Here is another message trying to upload a photo to Craigslist "Sorry, a server error occurred uploading 0363".

This issue is clearly one of the CAX80 5.0 GHz WIFI signal as I can use my 2.4 GHZ signal, as well as a USB C Ethernet dongle without any issues.  I have contacted NETGEAR support (Paul William G.).  He did acknowledge that he has encountered this issue quite often.

He asked me to re-upload the same version firmware, which is updated through Comcast.

Hardware Version 1.01

Firmware Version V2.1.5.2

Cable Firmware Version V1.02.08

So, I downloaded the 2.1.5.2 firmware and uploaded it to the router.  I also did a router reset as this was suggested as a second solution.  No luck guys.  I have tried changing numerous settings within the router.  No luck.

Paul stated that sometimes re-installing the same firmware over the existing firmware may resolve the problem.  I am not a certified technician, however, I have worked, built, fixed and modified numerous computer systems within the past 33 years, and I have never heard of such a thing.  Firmware if it fails, usually will completely screw up any system and not just a certain function of that system.  I urge you to give it a try, though.  Hopefully, I am wrong, and this solution may work.

The issue persists and I replied to NETGEAR in an email this evening.  I'll keep you posted.  Perhaps this issue needs to go to a higher authority.  Latest......just got an email.

It states "Hello Andreas, thanks for the information you provided that you've followed the steps. I can confirm and route the issue as a device failure and you are still within your hardware warranty, please reply to this email by attaching a picture or screenshot of the receipt or online invoice from where the CAX80 was purchased for the requirements for the replacement approval."

So, it looks as they want to replace the router.  Question to anyone out there.  Does anyone have a CAX80 modem where the 5.0 GHz signal works perfectly for uploads?  Anyone?

Andy

  • So, NETGEAR informed me that they will not replace the router because I bought it from a third party, mainly Ebay.

Luckily, I was able to return that router and I bought another CAX 80.

I will attempt to get my new router going and will test the upload issue on the 5.0 GHz frequency.

Where did you get this CAX80 from?

Keep us posted on how it works for you.

  • Hi everyone,

I have spent hours upon hours, and I have come to a possible solution/s for our problems.

As mentioned, I had the same issue.  Whenever I used the 5.0 GHz frequency, I could not upload photos to websites and could not send photos in email attachments.

I had an Amazon Fire Cube located very closely to the router and after I had moved it further away my Upload and Download stream indicator light went to a solid white light.  The Upstream indicator prior was always blinking.

I cannot %100 percent vouch for this fix; it did work for me after about three months of playing around with every setting within the router of the CAX80 and changing the firmware several times.

The solid white indicator lights come on when at least 2/two streams are locked in.  In my router settings it always indicated that at least 2/two upstream and downstream channels were locked, however, to the best of my recollection I always had a blinking white indicator for the upstream channel (meaning only 1 channel locked).

The second thing I changed was to use WPA3-Personal for my security settings with my Windows 11 Pro (23H2).  Specifically, at one point I did a Network Reset in Windows.  Then, for whatever reason my laptop WIFI would only work with WPA3-Personal and I got kicked out about every 10 minutes from my WIFI if I used WPA2-PSK (AES).  I had to log back in about every 10 minutes; what a pain!  Therefore, I changed my Router's WIFI security to "WPA2-PSK[AES] + WPA3-Personal".

I have tested my uploads on two websites and now it works using the 5.0 GHz band.  Also, I can now attach larger photo files to my email program and successfully send them off, which I was not able to do prior to these changes.

So, in summary ensure no electronics, speakers, amplifiers and such are nearby the router where the signals could possibly interfere with each other, or, where interference from such electronics could cause issues.

Then, try to use WPA3-Personal and WPA2-PSK (AES) together in your router's settings.  By the way, changing channels and such didn't do a thing for me.

Lastly, reboot your router until the downstream and upstream indicator lights are both solid!

    Good luck everyone!

    • My apologies.  This was not a solution.

I had a power outage and things went back the old way; meaning the 5.0 GHz doesn't upload any longer.

My Amazon Fire cube is still placed further away and also noticed upstream and downstream indicator will sometimes be blinking and sometimes steady.  I am at a loss.  It worked for about 2-3 days.

        The latest:

I bought a second CAX80 from Walmart.  It has the same, exact, identical issue.

        Few things:

        1) I also have Comcast; this is a common factor for all users, as I went through all the threads.

        2) The 5.0 upload relates mostly to browsers; not being able to upload pictures and such; I do too.

        3) Seems many users have issues on the 5.0 when they attempt to upload large files; I do too.

One user mentioned that the MAC Random Hardware Address could be the culprit; I tested it.  No difference for me whether it is enabled or disabled.

One user mentioned that Netgear Armor was still active and that the 5.0 upload was working.  Yes, I did have my 5.0 WIFI working for about 2-3 days until a power outage.  During that time the Netgear Armor was active as trial!

Last night I factory reset the router.  Then, I set it up using the Android App Nighthawk through my mobile data plan.  Later today I tested my router.  All of a sudden, I could upload photos to Craigslist again using the 5.0 GHz signal (couple users talked about this site).  Also, now I can upload again to the Next-door Neighbor site (this site was mentioned also in a previous discussion).

I tested my uploads to these two site 5-6 times, and they still work after having set up the router through the Netgear Nighthawk App with Armor still active for 16 more days.

Netgear support is terrible.  I told them enough with changing settings, etc. I could do uploads through my neighbor's router on the 5.0 frequency without any problems.  This also rules out any issues with my laptop that I'm using.  Right now 5.0 GHz uploads are working, however, large file transfers/uploads fail through AnyViewer, whereas small files upload just fine.  Netgear is supposed to send me a firmware update as I mention CASE #47070779.

This is definitely a NETGEAR CAX80 5.0 GHz WIFI issue!
