Additional Powerline Adapters can't access internet.
Hi,
I have recently purchased a new Netgear router (the R7000-100UK), turned my Virgin Media Superhub into modem only mode, and using two fairly old Netgear powerline adapters I already owned (forget what model they are, but can check if it’s important) I set my home network as follows:-
1: virgin media cable comes into the house, connects into the Superhub. The Ethernet cable comes out the Superhub and connects directly into one of the powerline adapters.
2: In the computer room, plugged in the other power adapter and connected it into the new Router. Used the various Ethernet ports at back of router to connect computer, NAS device and various other things in the room to Router, and the Routers wireless to connect mobile devices around the house to the network/internet.
All this was fine and seemed to be working without any problems.
However, I decided to purchase two more powerline adapters to allow me to connect the Xbox and a Raspberry Pie in the lounge into the wired network.
I have tried various things over the last few days to get the new adapter to be able to access the internet, including but not limited to:-
1) Tried adding the new adapter, and hiting the pair button on one of the existing adapters and then the new one.
2) I have reset both existing adapters to factory setting, and just plugged new one.
3) Used the Netgear desktop app to configure all adapters.
When I plug in new adapter and connect it to laptop, the three lights on adapted all appear green. When I use the Netgear Powerline desktop app, the network maps appear with all three adapters on it, and if you click on any one of them it shows lines between the adapters indication that they are talking to each other. However, the laptop is unable to access the internet, and when I try and ping my SuperHub and Router, both attempts fail with a time out. At one point during my various tests, the laptop appear to be using a ip address of 165.<something>.<something>.<something> (I’m guessing it was 165 as I have forgotten what is actually was) which didn’t appear to be correct and makes me thing It’s not taking to the DHCP serve in my router correctly (as the DHCP is set up to use the more usual 192.168.1.1-255).
I could be wrong, but I’ve not knowingly set up any MAC address filtering on the router.
Any ideas what I’m doing wrong or if you have any further questions please let me know.
Hi,
Changed my R7000 to Access Point mode, and took my SuperHub out of Modem only mode (but making sure the SuperHubs wireless stuff was turned off). Then made sure I didn't use any Yellow Ethernet ports when wiring up my home network,
It's all appears to be working so I'm happy that I've fixed my issue.
Thanks for all your efforts.
Mick

We really need to know which models you have. HomeplugAV2 is backwards compatible with HomeplugAV, for example, but neither would work with the original Homeplug 1.0 specification (like an old HDX101 unit)
Without knowing what kit you have it's difficult to answer what might be going wrong
If your laptop is showing an IP address of 169.xx.xx.xx then it isnt getting an IP address from your network via DHCP, it is, in effect, giving itself an IP address.

Thanks for your prompt response.
Just checked, and the two existing power adapters are XAV5601's.

Ok so they are HomeplugAV compatible. What version have you just purchased?
- clithesProdigyHow are you trying to connect all your equipment? Only one cable should be coming out of the Virgin hub, connecting via the power line adapters to your R7000. This is providing an Internet connection for the router. Everything else you own should connect to the R7000, either wired or wireless

Hi,
I do only have one cable connecting my Vigin Hub and R7000 (via the two power lines).
I think my problem is that this one cable is the only way my R7000 is connected to the mains network, so all other devices connected to my new power adapters can't connect to the DCHP server in my R7000 (if I understood what the Network chap at work told me correctly).
Last night I used one of the non yellow Ethernet ports at the back of the R7000 to connect to one of the new power adapters I’d plugged in my computer room (next to the existing XAV5601), I then plugged the other new power adapter in my lounge and paired the two new adapters, magically the XBox, Sky and Raspberry Pie all connected to the internet.
Going to rip it all out at the weekend and try and reconnect it a bit more efficiently, hoping it’ll still be working after I’ve done that.
- clithesProdigyOK I understand the problem now. The two powerline adapters between the Virgin hub and the R7000 need to be on their own power line network, separate to the others. To do this you give these two a different password (Encryption Key) to everything else. So these two units could have a password of 'HomeplugAV1' and everything else 'HomeplugAV2'
This will keep the two power line networks apart. You will need to have a power line unit on the 'HomeplugAV2' network connected to your R7000 as well as the one from your Virgin hub so that all your equipment receives an Internet connection from it
