Troubleshooting NETGEAR's Powerline Products
Troubleshooting NETGEAR's Powerline Products
- Powerline products work better when plugged into the wall without power strips, extension cords, surge protectors, or interruptible power supplies.
- Passwords. Powerline products have both a network password, and a device password. A particular device's password, which is not changeable, is printed on the Powerline product label. Once you have collected all your Powerline device passwords, use the encryption dialog box, as described on pages 9 and 12 of the XE102 User's Guide, to change the network password. (Without password protection, it is possible, although unlikely, for someone very nearby to access your network.)
- If you changed the default network password, make sure that all the Powerline products use the same network password.
- If you've moved a Powerline unit, or disconnected the cables, your other network devices may need about 5 minutes to refresh their information about the Powerline's current status.
- If you have earlier Powerline products, switch to the encryption used by later products. (Early versions of XA601 and XE602 are known to have compatibility problems with newer models.)
- To test whether a house's electrical wiring is contributing to Powerline problems, plug units in the same room. Examples of potential problems are: Old fuse boxes. Old wiring that does not meet modern wiring building codes.
- Interference may be caused by a Major draw of Electrical power through the circuit, or the wiring may not be up to code, The following major appliances may cause Interference: Refrigerator Freezer or Microwave Air Conditioning system Power equipment or other house equipment that draws a large amount of power like: Hair Dryer Air Compressor The above devices use a large amount of power, combined with the Television, and other A/V Equipment that may be plugged in will contribute to this interference.
- An outlet tester will help you identify problems such as bad grounds, reversed wires or bad connections - all of which you should avoid, of course. In fact, if you do encounter any of these problems, you should bring in a certified electrician to make the needed repairs.
- Swap devices to isolate the problem to a particular Powerline unit.
- Reset the Powerline adapters to the default settings using the utility.
- Use all the same Powerline models for best connectivity. Also, software for one model may not work for another model. In particular, remote and advanced features may not work between Powerline manufacturers.
- Powerline is not directed at businesses, however it may work in a business environment, anyhow. See Assessing Powerline for Business Environments. In some cases noise can be limited by placing line conditioners or surge protectors between the source of the noise, and the Powerline units. (Not between the units.) Consult a professional electrician to evaluate your electricity's noise and to suggest remedies.

- pfisherAspirantI already have two HDX101s die on me. Another words, just the power light is lit up and nothing else. Yes, I have been through the whole troubleshooting cycle with try a different outlet in the same room.
DON'T TRUST THESE DEVICES AS YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF ACCESS TO THE INTERNET. Have a backup plan. - PaulMPetropolisAspirantNeed help with this: I have a set of 2 Netgear Powerline AV Ethernet Adapters, model XAVB101, which worked fine connecting 2 laptops w Windows Vista and bringing the internet to both. For this I have been using a Linksys router
WRT 160-N, v. 2.
Then I got laptops with Windows 7 and downloaded the Powerline Utility v. D2.0.0.8 which supposedly upgrades compatibility to Windows 7 for these Netgear products.
Meanwhile I also changed my internet service to DSL provided by my phone co.
But the powerline lights in the middle of each Adapter do not come on, and there seems to be no communication between the Adaptors. I tried factory resets but so far, no results. Also tried the classic turning the router and DSL modem on and off.
Any troubleshooting or fixing suggestions? These will be greatly appreciated, thanks! - FinksAspirantI too have a pair of XAVB101's which have been working fine for over a year. I have one connected to my Virgin router box upstairs and the other connected to my laptop downstairs. About 3 weeks ago the network kept dropping and it's now got to the point that I get about 2 minutes (if I'm lucky) before I get 'No Internet Connection'.
I have tried a factory reset on both the Powerline adaptors, a factory reset on the Virgin router and a complete format / reinstall of Windows 7 on the laptop but this hasn't resolved the issue.
If I connect the laptop directly to the Virgin router it's fine and if I connect another laptop to the powerline adaptor it's fine. I currently have an old Linksys router between the Powerline adaptor and the laptop which keeps the network from dropping.
Anyone have any idea's, why when the laptop is connected directly to the Powerline adaptor, the network will drop? - madaudioAspirant

With respect, you need to improve your logic: the complaint was not that the utility was useless, the complaint was the advice to use the utility was useless, because the advice did not clearly identify which utility and where to find it.
A common problem with knowledgeable people is assuming other people have knowledge they do not have.
As a professional instructor who is always aiming to avoid assuming my students possess "common knowledge" I see many forum experts make this mistake when giving advice. - kirandailyAspirantits an honer to me using your product i used your router 5 years back its still running good

- beerocratAspirantI recommend taking it back and getting your money if you can. That's the best way to avoid the inevitable migraine that this product will undoubtedly cause you. I have a three year old home that has had zero electrical problems in 110 degree heat for an entire month. As soon as I had the pl1200 up and running, it started tripping breakers the instant I started pushing data across the network. It only took me about 30 minutes and 8 tripped breakers in three different rooms before I found this forum. This product will likely cause issues for anyone that users it.

It sounds like you have a sensitive system. Have you tried different powerline kit? If it does the same thing, then you have a different issue.
Rather than rejecting the hardware, which works fine for many people, I'd dig a bit deeper. Have you had an electrician check the earth system on your wiring? The plugs may be revealing a more worrying underlying issue.
