WN3500RP No Ability to Stream Video/Audio

Hello,

I have a WN3500RP set up to extend my wireless network. I am extending off of a Netgear R6300 router and am using the FastLane technology. The primary router and WN3500RP connect via 5 GHz and the extended network with the _EXT extension is a 2.4 GHz network.

I can connect to the _EXT network and my bandwidth tests are fine (typically 12 to 14 Mbps). I can check email and surf the web in an acceptable way.

However, I cannot stream any video or audio. If I try to use Youtube or any site that uses video, the video never plays...it just queues up as if not connected to a network or there is inadequate bandwidth. Also, my entertainment devices are able to connect to the _EXT network, but they too are unable to stream video. For example, with my AppleTV on the _EXT network I cannot even watch a movie preview. If I switch over to my primary Wifi network (that even has a low signal) I am able to stream just fine.

What could cause this type of behavior? I am at a loss, and I see no settings on the WN3500RP that would indicate that it would interfere with any type of media streaming.

Please help! Thank you in advance...

  • I'm using almost the exact same combo (I have the D6300 and WN3500RP) and streaming is working flawlessly. I haven't upgraded the extender though, it's running firmware V1.0.0.18_1.0.59.

Any chance you could try upgrading/downgrading the firmware of the extender? What version is it running currently?
  • I am using Firmware V1.0.0.20_1.0.60

It is reassuring to know that it at least works for others, but I'd really appreciate some advice on what I can check either on the WN3500RP or the primary N6300 router. It seems something is going awry since I am clearly able to pull a decent signal and bandwidth doesn't seem to be the culprit.
  • What I did do when I first go the D6300 was to uncheck Disable IGMP Proxying under Advanced -> Setup -> WAN Setup as I know some devices require multicast to work. I don't think that should be the case with simple stuff like YouTube though... But you could give it a try.

Have you spoken to Netgear Support?
  • I'll give that setting a try...it was checked so I unchecked it. I will report back.

I also opened a case with Netgear Support.
  • I unchecked the "Disable IGMP Proxying" setting and will report back to see if that helps.

I also created a ticket with Netgear Support but I haven't yet heard back from them.
  • Exact same situation as Chicago29. WN3500RP seems fine but won't stream from Hulu or Netflix. I switch back to main router when in range and streaming is great. Using fastlane. Suggestions?
  • FWIW my issue seems to be related to how the 5.4 connection works between the WN3500RP and my R6200v2 router. I turned off Fastlane and video worked fine on 2.4Gbut not 5.4G. For grins I turned back on Fastlane and connected to router with 2.4 and to TV with 5.4. So the issue seems to be the 5.4 connection between extender and router. I even experimented changing 5.4 channel to no avail. Since my laptop does not have 5.4 I would really like to configure the way it doesn't work. Suggestions appreciated.
  • I'm having the exact same problem. No video through the wn3500rp. Main router is WNDR3800. Speed test shows no difference between the two, but video won't stream through the extender.

Did you ever find a solution to your problem?

  • I faced the same problem and contacted NetGear Support... They were very helpful and the problem was something in the extender fixed with a firmware upgrade... This is what they wrote:
