Need recommendations

Normally I rent the equipment from my ISP but I hate eero (which is the only option for renting) and want to get away from it because it's only controlled via apps and I don't do apps.

I need some recommendations. Here is how I plan to use the equipment:

Whatever router I go with, I need to be able to connect to it via my desktop computer by typing in the router's ip address the old-school way. I like to be able to turn wireless on or off when I want to, or change the signal strength, and I only want to access it via desktop computer.

First I plan to purchase modem and router, or a modem/router combo, to use with ISP #1, who has fiber in the ground that connects to a box that switches to coax cable for final delivery to the house, and therefore we would connect said equipment to the coax. Coax and ethernet cable are in the walls.

Then, we will be switching to ISP #2 later; they are currently installing fiber in our neighborhood, and they may end up running fiber all the way to the house so that coax is no longer used for final delivery. If this is the case, will I need to change my equipment or is there equipment I can buy that can do both?

And I've read that maybe I should buy modem and router separately instead of doing them as a combo; why is that?

Oh and our speed will either be the 500 or 1000 plan.

Thanks for any advice provided, much appreciated!

  • Yes but they only have eero and I do not want eero. They do not offer any other options. So I have to buy my own equipment.

      Ok.

      (1) Does your ONT have ethernet out to the Eero?

      (2) If it does, do you know the max ethernet speed (1 gbps, 2.5, or perhaps even 10)?

Above you said you had coax coming into the house - if the ISP is using fiber, then that could be Moca.  Another place where the details matter.

The setup we have right now is with a provider who I will call ISP #0, who has fiber at the street that is run into one of those green utility pedestals outside in the yard, and is then converted to coax, and the coax comes from that green pedestal outside into the home and connects to a modem, and then eero connects to the modem. We therefore do not have an ONT, just the modem and eero. I do not know the max ethernet speed; it would just be limited by whatever the coax can deliver. I know we are not using moca anywhere in the house, but I couldn't tell you what is going on inside the green utility pedestal in the yard.

Do they have ONT units that are only just ONTs with out any built in routers? If so, get that then get something non eero for wifi router system.

Also ask if they support user bought ONT units, if so, then find something ONT only that you can buy that they support on there network.

If on Fiber, most ISP have router combo units or Fiber ONT only units.

If your going to be on Fiber, would be best to use the ISPs ONT only unit that the ISP is responsible for maintaining, then go with something external WiFI router that you can managed. Stand alone or MESH if you want something with wider coverage.
