R7960P firmware not upgrading

I have attempted multiple times to upgrade my current firmware, V1.4.1.44_1.3.5, to V1.4.1.50_1.3.10 and it fails. I have tried letting the router update itself and also downloading upgrade zip file straight from Netgear sight. Any reason why my firmware won't upgrade?

Thanks

  • Netgear didn't charge me anything to RMA the router.  I also told them to pound sand regarding their laughable tactic to make me pay for tech support because I was outside of 90 days.

I agree with your sentiments and I am not happy either, but I'm going to hope it's resolved.  Time will tell.

I sure will.  It arrived at my home a short while ago via Fedex, but I won't be home from work for another few hours or so.

  • Finally received my new replacement router a week or two ago. After a bit of a back and forth through their online support system (I referenced this thread and included the URL in my response early on to state this is a major issue and many others are dealing with it as well), they finally sent me out a brand new router, same model as the original I got from Costco. They waived any fees or shipping (obviously as this was their fault) and just had me put in my credit card info on an order form clearly stating there is $0 charge for the new router. They use it as collateral in case you don't return the old one (which they give you a prepaid label to return). But I had no issues and was never charged as I shipped back the old defective router the next day.

Interesting enough, the replacement I received still had the older firmware on it, so I immediately went to test out the update and it worked no problem through the web interface and is now current with no issues in upgrading it.

Problem resolved for now. If it acts up again I'll take it back to Costco since I have a new box now, but going to give it the benefit of the doubt until I decide to possibly switch to a rack mounted router with access points in the future.

Well today my replacement R7960P from July 5th 2020, so a mere 3 1/2 months old, DIED.  Supsect it was a refurb that died again.  So now I have to pay to ship it back and they will replace it again, but this is getting old.  Good thing I am kept my old router so I have something to work with.

Anyone else get a replacement that died?  Not sure they make them anymore so guessing it will be another refurb.

Pure junk. Had one smell and burn. NetGear support was awful. I took it back to Costco. Got another that failed after 3 months and would not upgrade firmware. I took it back. Costco’s comment was “we have had a lot of these returned!” Bought instead an Orbi. Works easily and fast. Thus far has not failed. Do not combine 2.5 and 5.0 MHz to one auto band. Do not use their security.
  • I've done both the  Check for new version from the Internet and Locate and select the upgrade file on your hard disk methods and they act like they're successful but I'm still stuck on V1.4.1.50_1.3.10 .... I've done a power-off for 5 minutes of no avail.  Using ncftp, a "pwd" showed  the location: ftp://updates1.netgear.com  ... I tried "put  R7960P-V1.4.1.66_1.3.26.chk" and got "server said: Permission denied." It appears that the partition doesn't have write permissions.

"FTP" and "TFTP" are spelled differently for a reason.

You seem to be trying to send a firmware file to a Netgear corporate
FTP server, _not_ to your own router, using FTP, _not_ TFTP.  Wrong
      destination, wrong protocol.

Yes, Netgear probably doesn't want every confused person with an
Internet connection to be storing files on its FTP server(s).  This does
not amaze me. You seem to be out of your depth.

My router is now updated the GUI Language Version to 1.4.1.66.2.1.46.1.  But the Firmware is still stuck at 1.4.1.50.1.3.10

  • I have the same problems with my R7960P. My current firmware is V1.4.1.50_1.3.10. There are three newer versions. The newest version is 1.4.1.68. I have been trying for over a month to update the firmware and cannot get it to take. All it does is reboot.

      How?

Manual update? Started by an app? Started by the router?

I have all three ways you mentioned several times over the last month or two and all my router does if reboot. I have tried using the app on my Samsung Galaxy S20+, I tried from my laptop via WiFi and ethernet, I have tried using my PC connected via ethernet directly to the R960P router. I have tried the app, manual, and by the router. I cannot get it to take. My show the unloading a spinning clock(?). It gets about half way and reboots. After it reboots it still shows the old firmware.
My router currently has firmware v 1.4.1.50. There is currently versions 1.4.1.64, 66 and 68 available. I have tried them all.

The problem with my router was solved by upgrading the firmaware manually.  Don't let the router upgrade itself automatically.
