Router Web Page refuses to connect after updating settings

Hi,

I am using a Nighthawk D7000v2 as my main router.

When I change settings on the router via netgear genie (router web page), most of the time it will refuse to connect after updating.

The router stills works fine and connects to the internet.

I can still ping the router but I can't connect to the web page until I physically reboot the router.

I have the latest firmware and I have reset the router many times, but this issue continues to happen.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

Still not thrilled by it.  (What's the actual error message from the
    web browser?)

    > Firmware version: V1.0.0.51_1.0.1

This must be some new meaning for "the latest".  I see
    "V1.0.0.53_1.0.2" on the server.

Relying on Netgear firmware to "Check for new version from the
Internet" is like relying on Netgear firmware for anything -- the result
    is often disappointment.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
    instructions.

    > > Reset router:
    > I mean power cycle

That's not the common meaning of "reset" in this context.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look for "reset".  It's far
from a sure thing, but it's possible that a settings reset (and manual
reconfiguration) would help in this case.  (Restoring saved settings
    could restore old problems.)

    > >Model: D7000|Nighthawk AC1900 VDSL/ADSL Modem Router:
    > This was the only one I could select in the forum but it is v2

Wrong forum.  It's in the list at:
          https://community.netgear.com/t5/x/bd-p/home-dsl-modems-routers

But yes, that firmware version agrees with "v2".  (Netgear "Community"
forum organization and administration are on a level similar to its
    router-firmware quality.)

It's worth a try, but a reproducible error is always easier to fix,
and a bug which never gets formally reported may never get fixed.

    > I will try and older firmware version

I'd start with the newer one, and than start working backward.
    (And/or a settings reset.)

    > Yes this is a minor issue, [...]

I disagree, but it would bother some users more than others.
(Especially those with remotely operated equipment.)

Netgear routers have some history of management web servers dying
with little or no provocation.  I don't recall reading of any cases of
this on a D7000v2, but that proves nothing.

    > [...] Maybe my expectation is too high for a consumer grade router.

I'd say not.  My D7000[v1] (currently V1.0.1.70_1.0.1) is not
bug-free, but can't remember ever catching its web server dying.
Generally, if that happens, it's a bug.

  • Is the issue that you update and cannot connect until a reboot. That to me seems like a very minor issue if that is what you are talking about. I have had routers in the past that would not work correctly until a reboot after firmware update. My thinking, which could be totally wrong, that there is info in the /tmp info that is not correct after the update. A reboot clears the /tmp directory so those files get rebuilt. How Linux works which is the base for these.

         Firmware version?

Which settings, exactly?  "most of the time" is not helpful.  Does
some specific change always cause the problem?  Does some other specific
change never cause the problem?  Or does some specific change sometimes
cause the problem, and sometimes not?

What, exactly, does "it will refuse to connect" mean?  What, exactly,
are you doing?  Is there some actual error message which you get (from
      your (unspecified) web browser?)?

      > I have the latest firmware [...]

As always, an actual version number would be more useful than your
opinion of what's "the latest" today.

      > [...] and I have reset the router many times, [...]

What, exactly, does "reset the router" mean to you?  Power cycle?
Hold the Reset button down for several seconds?  Other?

      > Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

Submit a formal support request to Netgear?  Try a different/older
      firmware version?

      > Model: D7000|Nighthawk AC1900 VDSL/ADSL Modem Router

Note that that suggests a D7000[v1], whose firmware is different from
that of a D7000v2.  (One more reason for providing an actual firmware
      version.)

      > Is the issue that you update [...]

I assume that "change settings" and "update firmware" mean different
things.  But, again, a detailed description of an actual action which
causes the problem might avoid this sort of confusion, too.

Hi antinode, guess you didn't like my post.

        Firmware version: V1.0.0.51_1.0.1

This has happened with a few different setting changes, this time it was changing DNS servers.

I would guess it happens when the router is updating settings and not rebooting.

I have tried on chrome, firefox and IE and the message

        >Latest firmare:

When I checked if an update was available the router said I had the latest version

        > Reset router:

        >Model: D7000|Nighthawk AC1900 VDSL/ADSL Modem Router:

This was the only one I could select in the forum but it is v2

        > I assume that "change settings" and "update firmware" mean different things

yes, change settings for example, change DNS servers, VLANID, LAN IP, etc.

I posted here instead of a formal support request because I can't always reproduce the error and thought someone might have come across the same issue.

I will try and older firmware version

      Hi myersw,

      Thanks for your response.

When you change some settings in the genie and click apply the router will update settings (e.g. changing DNS servers)

Other setting changes will reboot the router (e.g. VLAN/Bridge settings).

In this case I was changing DNS servers.

Yes this is a minor issue, but it means if I change settings I need to go to the router and power cycle it.

Maybe my expectation is too high for a consumer grade router.

    That's a modem/router.

That raises a couple of questions. Is that right? What else is on your network?

If it is a D7000v2, you have posted your message in the section of this community given over to Nighthawk WiFi Routers. (This is easily done, given Netgear's impenetrable community structure.) Your device is a DSL Modem/Router.

You might get better replies, and find other answers, over in the appropriate section:

Sorry I assumed it would be under Wireless routers as D7000v1 was.

But in future I will use the correct section.

      Thanks

No need to apologise. I did say that Netgear makes life difficult.

Many issues are generic and apply to whatever you have. But looking for past chatter is best done in the right zone.

With luck, you won't have to waste too much time here troubleshooting. But you'd be welcome back. Or just stick around for light relief.
