Ext USB drives suddenly have red lock icons #24184133

Been using my ReadyNAS 102 for about a year now. Been happy with it overall.

A while back, I threw a USB 3.0 HD on pretty much as a share drive, a way to schlep big files around without having to worry about a Flash Drive or burning a CD. That worked just fine.

About a week ago, I added a second USB 3.0 drive, and that's when things got weird.

I wanted a central repository for media files for Plex. Yes, I know, the ReadyNAS 102 doesn't have the HP to transcode things. But as a straight data dump to our Roku, it works pretty well, as no transcoding is needed.

For starters, the External HD is a Samsung of some flavor. I believe it has a Seagate drive in it, and it's a 3 TB drive.

When I plugged this 2nd HD into the USB 3.0 port, it wasn't recognized. I didn't see anything about external HD's needing to meet hardware specs, so I was confused. I tried plugging it into the front USB 2.0 port and that worked well enough. Odd, but not a deal killer, right?

So last night, I'm streaming a HD movie and suddenly in the middle of it, playback stops, and I get the error that the share had vanished. I checked the ReadyNAS and it was still on (I actually have it plugged into a UPS so things like that don't happen). I jumped on my laptop and went to the readycloud site to see what was up. The 2nd drive now had a red lock icon on it. Confused, I checked permissions. They were all off. I tried turning them back on, and... they wouldn't change. However, if I go into the Manage pages, I can still access the external drives.

So I go back to the Readycloud site. Now BOTH external drives have the red lock icon and cannot be accessed via the Readycloud site. They're still accessable in the Manage page, though. The external drives are now not showing up via the network, either. So my mapped network drives are inaccessible. They simply don't show up at all over the network on any computer. And both drives' permissions refuse to be changed.

Rebooted the NAS. Nope, same problem. Rebooted the laptop. Problem still there. Tried another browser. Still there. Tried another computer. Still there.

I have tried ensuring that I'm logging in with the correct capitalization of my user ID, but I had it correct. The shares on the internal HD's are still there and still accessible, it's only the external drives now that have the red lock icon on them.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Can you attach your logs zip file (System > Logs > Download Logs) to your support case?

This is related to an issue that is addressed in 6.2.0 Beta 3, I think. 6.2.0 is coming soon. It would be worth checking if you can if you still have the issue on that firmware once it is available.

As for the USB3 port vs USB2 port, it sounds like the USB3 device you have may not be compatible with the USB3 ports on your NAS.

Does it work if you boot the NAS with just one USB disk attached?

    Do you have a backup?
  • Oh, I'm not concerned with what's on the USB drives at all. I have backups and mirror them from another computer (since the ReadyNAS can't handle transcoding for Plex, I use a different computer for serving outside of home. The direct feed from the ReadyNAS is faster than making the hops from my desktop to the Roku) to the ReadyNAS. Or, I did.

It's not a big deal, just an annoyance. Any idea when 6.2.0 will drop?

    Thanks for your help.

Soon. When the update so available, when you open ReadyCloud you will be prompted about the upgrade.
