Addons and Genie and Future
Hello Guys,
I put all my addons at $0 - 0€ on Genie store.
I can't change certain price for old arm app but all app are at $0 0€ now
I'm also thinking on leaving the Genie program/Market which is too restrictive for us.
I don't know how Netgear will react but since the begining I'm thinking on this solution to go back to previous system, where addons should be free and people donate if they like the addons
I don't know what will be the future, but I could also decide to stop making addons
You can find all my addons in a drop box : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ie9pwk1wut72ias/p6_X2QeOIC
If you don not have dropbox installed use this link to install it, so I will have more space to share addons : http://db.tt/v4mPZg7l

- chirpaLuminaryI'm with you on the openness. NETGEAR does not have the infrastructure to handle these added layers. Just the 'price change', how long will it take for that to be reviewed (~six weeks)? The Genie website is suffering from slow/bad design. They tried to launch it like they are Apple, no where near that level of participation. A $100 developer sign-up fee... Hah!
I hope to see you stick around, with community add-ons that are cheap/free, driven primarily by donations of satisfied customers.
After many months of on-going Genie issues, they need to abandon it and start clean with something new. And by that, I mean,... Listen to the existing community developers to design a proper spec, don't make your own which is badly designed. Also the limited currency support is pretty bad, use a decent payment gateway, or make everything free. They also have not commented on the whole 'uninstall bug', among other issues, and if they have even been addressed yet.
It's bad enough they alienated the existing customers by denying OS6 on the existing platform, even though it works fine.
The whole '1 million dollar app' contest is also a joke. Their hand picked judges pick what suits them, not the community favor. The 'leaderboard' also only contains 'premium partners', no community add-ons. It is also only valid in USA, and at least one of the leaderboard apps is DEVELOPED in UK, but MARKETED in USA. So are they going to bring the marketing guys to Vegas? The two core community add-on developers are outside of USA by the way... How fair. Then if you do get picked for #1, you then again only have a 1:100 chance of getting a random number to win the annuity grand prize (based on NETGEAR being around in 40 years?). - b2thetAspirantSuper,
Thank you for all you have done and devolped. I am sure I can speak for the rest of the community - we would hate to see you go, it just wouldn'd be the same without you.
I agree, Netgear needs to change the way things aer going and let it be open and free. They will loose all of the developers and customer at the rate they are going. - ihartleyTutorHa- the $1m prize. 1/100 chance of $400k (MAX real money given inflation over 40 years). Well, erm, that's a $4k bet - woo hoo. The best developer gets a $4k bet. Sell your wife and get developing now!!
Seriously, if Super is leaving, where is the hope. Is it with the 600+ developers they've signed up (wherever they are...).
We are seeing the first signs of madness - when the Marketing department start believing their own bulls**t.
Dear Netgear. You are not Apple. You are not Google. Get over it. - MacManiakAspirant@Chirpa : Dreaming.... it's soooo beautiful.
Spend time onto a store, and not onto the GUI, it's not a really good idea. 1st, try to work onto the storage interface and THEN, onto an external store. (Do not put the cart before the horse.)- A user-friendly interface helps manufacturers to get more users. And then these users will buy applications onto the store.
- A store must be responsive, have fast browsing. Don't put online a buggy store :
- Users will not browse it more than 2 minutes
- Developers will not try to lose time on publishing plugins/apps
Here's some ideas :
Just a last detail about the contest... The US aren't the only country existing into the world. Think Diff.... hem... Think Larger! - kwalnutAspirantWill these add-ons work on the Ultra 4 running 4.2.x?
- super_poussinVirtuosoNo only R6
- F_L_TutorAs I´ve stated before, I don't mind paying for add-ons.
Wouldn't as solution like the one WhoCares? has work for you super-poussin? - aksVirtuosoIt feels like the great givaway, and certainly makes it easier to try out new add-ons. This is great news.
I hope the donations have helped in the past, but I recall a post saying they didn't add up to much. Sad, but this is the market we are in. I am seeing the same in the professional software market, where comparing 'free' with 'paid' without consideration to everything else is sometimes ridiculous. We do provide free evaluations of full products and yes we know people will crack the licensing, but we rely on professionals to use and pay for quality products. Still, we prefer to support the community than not. It makes sense. - ihartleyTutorEr, users have paid lots of money for a NAS and disks. A few $$ here or there isn't the issue; if they had the time they'd spend it sorting out their media library rather than crack a $3 software buy.
The problem is, and has always been, Genie. You have to rub you NAS three times for it to work.... I notice most other NAS vendors have a lot more apps, and are less interested in trying to make a few $$. If individual add-ons want you to pay a few $$$ via Paypal for a license, let's go. Otherwise give up a platform that is dying by the day. - ahpsi1TutorHmm. A quick look at the Genie Marketplace shows 61 apps (-> https://genie.netgear.com/UserProfile/). This includes RN and router apps. Of those we have the following breakdown:
- Super Poussin: 26
NETGEAR: 7
Steve-O: 1
RNXtras: 23
Polkast: 1
Qnext: 1
Qualcomm Atheros Inc.: 1
Symform Inc.: 1
Eight developers with the single most prolific of them being Super Poussin who accounts for 42% of the apps currently available. If Super Poussin is concerned about the issues the Genie framework has created I know I don't feel comfortable about using it. Though Netgear doesn't officially comment when asked directly if I ask very nice will we get a response?
Please, Netgear, can you comment on this thread and include plans for making this right? :D
