How to setup ReadyNAS to work with Genie Marketplace

A lot of people are having problems setting up ReadyNAS to work with Genie Marketplace. Hopefully these steps will resolve the problems. Note: This instruction is only applicable to ReadyNAS with firmware 6.0.x.

Getting a Genie account:
1. Go to https://genie.netgear.com/UserProfile/#NewUserPlace: to create your new account.
2. You should receive a confirmation email to verify your identify.
3. Once you are done, make sure you can login to Genie Marketplace website: https://genie.netgear.com/UserProfile/#LoginPlace:

Turning on Genie Service from ReadyNAS UI
1. Go to System > Settings > Services Panel and click "genie". This process will take about 5 to 10 minutes to finish. If the spinner stops, it doesn't guarantee that the service has completely started (Yes, this will be fixed in 6.0.5). To verify whether your genie service has started successfully, open a new tab from your browser and enter: "http://[IP]/CPProxy/", you should see "Hello from Your Netgear Control Point". If you don't see this message, please wait a few more minutes and try again.
2. If your genie service has started, go to Apps tab and login using the same account info you created previously. If this is your first time logging in, it will take slightly longer (about a minute) to activate your NAS.
3. When it is done, you should see available apps listed here (Available tab).

Note: If you are accessing Genie Martketplace (genie.netgear.com) and ReadyNAS UI at the same time, please use separate browser (instead of separate tab in the same browser) for both of them. For example, use Chrome for ReadyNAS UI and Firefox for Genie Marketplace. You need to do this because they share the same session, so logging in on one side will invalidate the session on the other side, just like if you already logged in to your gmail account, clicking a new tab entering mail.google.com will automatically log you in.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

  • So why is it when you purchase an app, you have to restart RN for it to show up in the "installed apps" tab? It should install and refresh automatically without a need for reboot (unless the app requires it which it should provide some sort of prompt telling you so).

No, it's no need to reboot unless the app requires. All you need to do is waiting the app installation completed, it will pop-up an event log like "xxx app has been installed succuessfully" under the menu bar. Then you can go to Apps->Installed page, and click "Refresh" button. Then you can see the app you installed listed there.

  • I have tried three applications and let the window sit for hours (where it says it's installing the application may take a few minutes and has the ok button). I have never seen the "xxx app has been installed succuessfully". Based on the manual process it usually takes a few minutes to download and install the application so something is not right. Either way its not even close to user friendly nor reliable. I really don't like complaining but so many other vendors have done a pretty good job on their app store implementation and there is just no excuse for this.
