ReadyNAS OS 6.9.3 | Run on existing x86 (4.2) #notsupported
There are a few threads on this, showing how to convert 6.0 firmware to run on the 4.2 platform.
I am combining the information here, so it is easier to digest.
This is UNSUPPORTED by NETGEAR. Do so at your own risk, without support from NTGR.
You need to factory default after converting your NAS to the new platform, BACKUP YOUR DATA!
ReadyNAS OS 6 will only work on 64-bit systems (Ultra/Pro), the NVX/2100v1 models are 32-bit and thus are not supported.
Here are pre-built images for the lazy:
- R4toR6_Prep_Addon.bin (26 KB) (upload first, don't reboot, avoids the need for manual factory default in between)
- R4toR6_6.9.5.bin (67.6 MB)(upload after add-on)
After you upload the addon/firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default. Your system should be back up in less than 10 minutes running the new firmware.
If you want to build the image on your own, you can follow the steps from this wiki article:
$ wget -q ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.zip
$ unzip -q ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.zip
$ head -n1 ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.img
info::name=ReadyNASOS,version=6.0.4,time=1364529349,size=49301504,md5sum=4086b247f29be084549f2b150ada8a70,arch=x86_64,descr=ReadyNASOS
$ echo -n 'info::name=RAIDiator-x86,version=6.0.4,time=1364529349,size=49301504,md5sum=4086b247f29be084549f2b150ada8a70,arch=x86,descr=ReadyNASOS for 4.2!' > newhead
$ dd conv=notrunc if=newhead of=ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.img
Basically, changes the ::name and ::arch in the header to match with what RAIDiator 4.2 expects.

Did you do anything to get the fans working? Because mine reports it as dead even though it spins merrily, - bvanaerdeAspirant

No, this was working well. I updated from 6.1.8 to 6.1.9 without problems.
Others have reported some problems with the fans as well, but I thought these problems were solved.

The current version is 6.2.2 but my Ultra 4 is running perfectly on 6.1.8. I'd like to have the new features but I'm concerned about the stability and compatibility of the new firmware with my old hardware. At least... until someone else confirms that it works fine.
Cheers, MB - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThere are several people who have had issues when installing 6.2.x. You might want to wait until 6.2.3.
- boris_hodakAspirantHello everyone,
I have to say THANK YOU to the people that made this possible. The Pro 6 is an amazing unit and with the CPU and RAM upgrade, it can last a long time on the OS6.
I am currently running the 6.2.3 T1751 version of the OS with an upgraded X3220 Xenon Quad Core 2.4GHz processor. One major thing that I am running into though is that the Apps page doesn't show at all. I really need to have Plex Server and couple other services working but without the apps page I can't do anything. No installed or available apps show. I guess it's one of the GUI bugs I've heard of before.
How can I fix this?
Thanks
Boris - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYour screen shot suggests that you didn't click on "available apps".
Another thing to check is that the NAS can connect outbound to the internet. Checking for a firmware update is one way to test it. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf StephenB's suggestion does not resolve the problem can you send me your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)? Your system may have fallen back onto the Apache safe config.
- chopin70VirtuosoHi,
If I update my Ultra 2 (RNDU-2000) to OS 6.1.9:
1- will the new file system be BTRFS?
2- will the encryption of volumes work?
3- any step by step to revert to last official Raidiator if needed?
4- any current known bugs except eventually fans?
Best regards - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired
