ReadyNAS OS 6.9.3 | Run on existing x86 (4.2) #notsupported
There are a few threads on this, showing how to convert 6.0 firmware to run on the 4.2 platform.
I am combining the information here, so it is easier to digest.
This is UNSUPPORTED by NETGEAR. Do so at your own risk, without support from NTGR.
You need to factory default after converting your NAS to the new platform, BACKUP YOUR DATA!
ReadyNAS OS 6 will only work on 64-bit systems (Ultra/Pro), the NVX/2100v1 models are 32-bit and thus are not supported.
Here are pre-built images for the lazy:
- R4toR6_Prep_Addon.bin (26 KB) (upload first, don't reboot, avoids the need for manual factory default in between)
- R4toR6_6.9.5.bin (67.6 MB)(upload after add-on)
After you upload the addon/firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default. Your system should be back up in less than 10 minutes running the new firmware.
If you want to build the image on your own, you can follow the steps from this wiki article:
$ wget -q ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.zip
$ unzip -q ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.zip
$ head -n1 ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.img
info::name=ReadyNASOS,version=6.0.4,time=1364529349,size=49301504,md5sum=4086b247f29be084549f2b150ada8a70,arch=x86_64,descr=ReadyNASOS
$ echo -n 'info::name=RAIDiator-x86,version=6.0.4,time=1364529349,size=49301504,md5sum=4086b247f29be084549f2b150ada8a70,arch=x86,descr=ReadyNASOS for 4.2!' > newhead
$ dd conv=notrunc if=newhead of=ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.img
Basically, changes the ::name and ::arch in the header to match with what RAIDiator 4.2 expects.

- chopin70VirtuosoI read that 6.2.3 should be the first safe release for Ultra 2 to update
I am looking for bit rot with checksum function checks
1- Is it safe to update to 6.2.3 or should I stick to 6.1.9?
2- can the Ultra 2 hardware cope with bitrot + checksum enabled on whole system?
3- if 2) is no: can OS 6.2.3 still schedule regular bit rot/checksum verification on whole drives? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI would update to 6.2.3.
Whether you should use bit-rot protection or not depends on your use case. - chopin70VirtuosoMy use case is data that is rarely if ever updated directly on the NAS, except during PC--->NAS backup
It is more needed for read operations at sync time, DLNA streaming and backup
In any case, can we still schedule weekly bit rot detection on whole volume?
For info:
I built the image using this code:
download 6.2.3: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... x86_64.zip
head -n1 ReadyNASOS-6.2.3-x86_64.img
info::name=ReadyNASOS,version=6.2.3,time=1429136985,size=57862144,md5sum=15a33ffa11d28a5f5ea1fa87f8ac208d,arch=x86_64,descr=ReadyNASOS
root@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tmp# echo -n 'info::name=RAIDiator,version=6.2.3,time=1429136985,size=57862144,md5sum=15a33ffa11d28a5f5ea1fa87f8ac208d,arch=x86,descr=ReadyNASOS for 4.2!' > newhead
root@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tmp# dd if=newhead of=ReadyNASOS-6.2.3-x86_64.img conv=notrunc
0+1 records in
0+1 records out
139 bytes (139 B) copied, 6.0018e-05 s, 2.3 MB/s - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFor that bit-rot protection should hopefully work well.
I would recommend you schedule volume maintenance such as defrag and balance. - chopin70VirtuosoWired,
If I follow the wiki guide to get the R4toR6_6.2.3.bin file, I do not end up with same headers as mdgm posted files
I need rather to use this:
root@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tmp# head -n1 ReadyNASOS-6.2.3-x86_64.img info::name=ReadyNASOS,version=6.2.3,time=1429136985,size=57862144,md5sum=15a33ffa11d28a5f5ea1fa87f8ac208d,arch=x86_64,descr=ReadyNASOS
root@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tmp# echo -n -e 'info::name=RAIDiator-x86,version=4.2-6.2.3,time=1429136985,size=57862144,md5sum=15a33ffa11d28a5f5ea1fa87f8ac208d,arch=x86,descr=ReadyNASOS\n\n' > newhead
root@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tmp# dd if=newhead of=ReadyNASOS-6.2.3-x86_64.img conv=notrunc
0+1 records in
0+1 records out
140 bytes (140 B) copied, 0.000137043 s, 1.0 MB/s
Notice theses changes:
name=RAIDiator-x86
version=4.2-6.2.3
descr=ReadyNASOS\n\n
-e command on echo
What is the most proper way to get a correct header? This method or the method detailed in wiki and shown in my above post? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe way you did it should work and is probably better than the method in the wiki.
The headers I use I have found to work reliably. - xtrips1Aspirant
Hello,
The procedure says it will return to Factory Default.
Only for the Settings or will it also erase all the data on disks?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Switching from OS4 to OS6 will destroy your data, not just settings.
- xtrips1Aspirant
Ouch!
Well, I have another NAS that I could use to swap the data while doing this upgrade from OS4 to OS6, but that means so much work and hassle.
So my question is why would I do that?
I mean can you give me like the 2 top reasons why I should do the upgrade.

Hi,
Sorry to revive an old thread, I have just taken the plunge and updated my Pro Pioneer Edition using the 'PREP4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin' & 'R4toR6_latest.bin' files downloaded on the 27th August. Nearly everything is working perfectly but I do have 1 question & 1 problem.
Question, by NAS shows it's running 6.3.5 - Is that correct? As the Pro Pioneer is an x86 based machine I would have expected 6.2.4 at best?
Problem, I am unable to logon to Vault. I keep getting a 'Vault Login Failed' error. (everything works if I logon via browser - so my account is ok)
I know there has been a recent (20th July 2015) update to Vault to v2.9.23 which I had carried out prior to upgrading (i.e. whlst on FrontView 4.x) so am wondering if this could be the issue - however, I have tried installing the package from http://www.readynasvault.com/update/ but it keeps failing to install.
Can you help?
cheers,
Adrian

All of my legacy systems are running 6.2.4, which reports to be the latest available version. So I don't know how you could actually be running 6.3.5. Where is this reported, in Frontview, RAIDar, or both?

6.3.5 (beta rc2) can be installed on the legacy x86 NAS.
