Sorry it took me so long to come back. I tried to run dd on disk#4. Twice. Both times it ran for 4-5 days without finishing. I could see dd running on ps -ef, but it wasn't using much cpu either according to htop.
Unfortunately I was not able to keep an ssh window open to view any progress messaging. My understanding is that it should not take nearly that long to dd the drive, so I have to conclude its fubar. DDing it did remove the weird messages I was seeing through the frontview interface. now it's just showing as greyed out, instead of red and there are no messages about needing to unmount the others.
I also tried numerous times to run smartctl -t long on it... That reports a bunch of weird info, even though it says PASSED, I don't think I trust it. I am going to pull it and flag it as a bad drive. Forum won't let me post the whole output from smartctl -a because its too big apparently.

My drive 3 is also suspect. It says passed, but I would appreciate comment on this. Its currently installed in raid5 configuration with the first two drives...and has been running a couple weeks ago while I was trying to run the other tests on drive4...no errors reported so far regarding disks 1-3, but anyway here is the smartctl info for drive3, appreciate comments:
