6.1.5 Are you crazy? or am I confused?
OK.. just saw that 6.1.5 is released...
So I think "great.. they should have sorted the IE11 issue"
And sure enough.. release notes say "4.Compatibility improvements for Windows 8.1 Internet Explorer 11.".. OK - I got IE11 on win 7.. but I guess thats close enough...
But then I see... point 11.. and think.. WTF.. To remind people.. 11 says
"11.Improved performance with large volumes (Most likely seen on the ReadyNAS 104). A factory default is required to make the changes. Copy all data off the ReadyNAS, upgrade the firmware, factory default the unit, and copy all data back onto the device"
So hang on.. what are you saying?... you saying if I just want the performance improves I need do the "copy off, upgrade, copy back".. or I have to do that irrespective?
Half of me says.. "they MUST mean its just for the performance installs"...as there is NO WAY they could issue such an update without a MASSIVE warning.. number 1 on the list.. to say your data at risk if you do this update.. not stuff it in an number 11 almost as an aside...
And surely - they would not tie a required update (i.e. make it IE11 compatible).. with the need to do a complete rebuild...
But the other half of me says.. "its not clear... and 11 seems like a change that happens for all, does not sound optional...and for something so important.. how can I trust them if they cant be clear, one way or the other...and it seems like they can mess up USB 3 and still think its good enough to push out... are they a bunch of professionals doing this? or Muppets?"
My stuff is backed up.. but that's not the point...
The point is.. you need be crystal clear..and your not
Can someone clarify please.... its just a little important. May be the update will prompt and be clear.. but this is to important to trust that it will be caught later..
Thanks.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou only need to do the factory default if you have performance issues. The factory default is optional.
- YojiAspirantThanks for your quick reply.. appreciated :)
- rit1AspirantAnyone with 104 device needs more info than found in the current note. We may not have performance issues now, but without more details we do not know if we could suffer issues in the future unless we do a reset now.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell then you should backup, do a factory default and restore from backup, but you don't have to.
- rit1AspirantWhich will involve taking a device offline for a week or more depending on the size of disks and the amount of data that must be moved around. As you can guess there needs to be more information than maybe, possibly, but you don't have to.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhen the 104 gets fairly full with large disks installed performance can become terrible. The change to the nodesize and leafsize obtained when doing a factory default on 6.1.5+ should reduce fragmentation and help a lot.
- rit1AspirantThanks, that the type of information I was hoping for and allows me to make a call.
- hmuessigLuminaryAs they say your results may vary but I was forced to do a factory default. Several days after doing the upgrade to 6.1.5 my RN314 would not boot at all - could not read the root. It was unable to reliably recognize the 2TB eSATA and the 1TB USB2 drives connected to the back for backups and I tried rebooting several times to correct the issue and finally had a bricked machine. . .
I did a factory default and restored everything from the eSATA drive. The USB2 drive will go elsewhere and I'll connect a USB3 drive when that issue gets fixed in the next release.
The 314 seems stable and the performance may be slightly better. I've been able to copy large files without issues and QuickBooks and Photoshop are quite happy.
I'd agree with many who have posted that Netgear could have done a MUCH better job with this upgrade. BIGGER warnings about the upgrade and a STRONG recommendation that if you upgrade a factory default is needed. Then folks with boxes that we're working well (enough) could have skipped the upgrade.
And I'll refrain from commenting about a OS upgrade that breaks a feature/function that works!
Overall I think that Netgear needs to do a much better job of support, communication about upgrades (much better, more complete testing and release notes), and customer support. It is a shame that all of the good information - good and no so good - for the ReadyNAS line comes from this forum (Thank you!)
The OS6 line has had a bumpy start and after 6 months the bumps continue . . . Netgear has (had?) a good reputation. But if I knew then what I've experienced since getting my 314 I would have purchased another brand.
My 2 cents.
RN314 with 4 2TB WD Reds - SchorseAspirantHi,
I just did also the Factory reset after updating to 6.1.5. and I'm woundering why it takes that long. The RN102 (2x 3TB) is busy since more than 4 hours and non responsive via the network address on the web interface. Only the Act-LED indicates activity. Will the harddisk be reformatted during this time? - rit1AspirantReformatted and remirrored, so the device may take days. It should not seem locked, which may indicate another problem and one I've seen in the past when my 104 was mirroring. You may find that it will complete, but the only indication will be a lack of disk I/O. I had to reset my device, at which point it re-mirrored and allowed me access via the web interface.
