A issue with Ultra 4 and 3tb drive

i have a readynas ultra 4 with 4x 2tb seagate disks that i had for like a year, now i put a 3tb seagate disk in and synced it up (1tb free on it tho, but i allready knew that) like 2 months ago.

everything was good and dandy, then 2 weeks ago i set it to 10 min inactivity spindown power save since its not used mutch, just for storage.
i also added scrubbing and consistency check one a week at different days.

i have firmware 4.2.17.

now on the second week after the scrubbing i got "c: unprotected" in the nas display, so i opend the admin ui in my browser and it says "dead" on the 3tb drive.
now what im wondering is is there a issue with the nas vs 3tb drive (seagate ST330000651AS) maybe related to the scrubbing/consistency check or spindown / spinup stuff.
i would like to sort this out before i put the drive in a computer to make a new partion and do a full disc check n stuff since that takes ages...

i would like to check if the disk is broke or its a nas issue before i contact the store i got it from.

  • All drives can and do fail. Most will after long service, but many will fail early. (Just as some light bulbs go "pop" when you turn them on the first time). My first NAS a 4+ year old NV+ was initially set up with 2x500GB Seagates. One morning i walked in to only one drive light and checking Frontview, sure enough one drive had failed. I replaced it that day and RMA'd the failed drive. The original drive in the other slot and the replacement for the failed drive ran for over three years accumulating over 25,000 power on hours without any problems. I still have the NV+ in service, but the drive size has been upgraded twice in the last year.

I would suggest you download and install SeaTools for Windows. Then connect the drive to an SATA port on the motherboard and run the tests on that drive. The tests will not run properly if the drive is connected to an eSATA port or USB port via a converter.

FWIW - I am currently running 2x3TB Hitachi drives in two NVX units running 4.2.17. In addition, if the Ultra 4 had trouble with 3TB drives, there would be a lot of previous posts, and I don't recall any off hand.
  • will seatools run correctly if the motherboard does not support 3tb drives (showing em as 750gb (ish)?

also im runing xp that also isnt supporting 3tb drives, but as 750gb is drives (belive its the left over space from 2.25TB max supported capacity)
  • Ok, so its me and my nas again... This time i fear im up poo creak with no paddle (pardon my french).

So i had no easy accessable way to test out the drive, so i thought "i might just have been a bad connection or something" then i blew a couple of breaths over the connectors on the drive (my pro it tech schooling coming into us there^^) and pushed it back into the nas and turned it on. The nas found the drive again and started to sync it up n stuff. After like 14h everythings all good. The next week was fine and the nas did its planned scrubbing and consistency check with no prob. Then i tried to access a vid from my suroundsystem (Samsung) and it started to load the vid (have to wait like 10sec for the drives to spin up and stuff after i enabled spin down powersaver (use the nas like twice a day at the most)).

And like 30sec onto the vid it stopped and all vids i tried said "unknown format" and i knew something was wrong. So i checked the display on the nas, but onlike last time it didnt say "c: unsecure" like it did last time when had the 3tb marked as [Dead]... now it says "Resync c: 0.0%" and its been saying that for over a day now :<<

    So now im wondering :
Is the entire partion done for? Do i dare turn of the nas while it says "Resync c: 0.0%"? What is my best course of action, to turn the nas of and replace drive or hot swap in a new drive, its clear the resync is not gona ever be done....

Should i get another 2TB drive or buy a full set of 3tb (that was the plan before i got problems with the current 3tb drive, is it the nas (as in ultra 4 vs 3tb drives) or the drive?

Is it something dodgey with the 3tb's in the nas regading spin downs, scrubbing or consistency checks, i dont know. Might it be becuase its 1x 3tb and 3x 2 tb leaving about 1tb unalocated, again i just dont know...

This is a print screen of my current status (volume and drive 1 lights are blinking green and yellow) :

i would very mutch like to get some good suggestions to my next course of action since as u can see from the SS there is a lot of data to be lost if the partion goes boom...

PS. It does not say anything about resyncing on the other drives in RAIDar.
  • I would strongly suggest that you open an on line tech support case ASAP. I would not do anything to the unit until they respond. Once you get a case #, edit your first post and append it to the subject line.

I also saw the greyed out "locate" (and smart status) when I was going an expansion (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=57306). Though I didn't report it...

Turning off the NAS (I also unplugged it for a while), and restarting it eliminated the missing "locate", etc. Though for my core expansion issue I ended up doing a reset and reloading all the data from backup. I have had no problems since.

I would certainly leave everything running "as is" until support can take a look.
  • Your disk has I/O error, even when I run command

On my ReadyNAS+ V2 I am now being told that disk 2 is dead. I have took it out and connected it to my pc and it says it is healthy!
I told the Nas to check all disks on reboot and it said they were fine. Is this a spinning down issue? I need to know because I have no way of telling if my data is safe in this Nas?
This only shows the drive dead when it has spun down. If you try to access the nas, it will spin up and within a minute the Nas tells me that all my hard drives are healthy. They are 4, 3TB WD30EZRS
I HAVE ALSO DONE LONG AND SHORT TESTS WITH SOFTWARE AND IT COMES BACK THAT THE DISK IS FINE!
I have had lots of emails and phone calls from Win in support and now they won''t respond.
This is the 2nd unit and I have had nothing but trouble from day 1.
David is now my support engineer, not that much support is going on!!
Also, how do you turn off the spin down option?
  • Ive got pretty much the same issue, with 4x3tb drives.
Drive 2 has reported dead, however the raid seems to have falled over.

Been through quite a run around with Netgear suppport- Level 2-> and back again many times.
I'd be very interested in any further info on if this is a known bug or what the actual cause is....
