Backup 316/516 to Ready Nas Pro 6
Hi,
I am interested in upgrading to one of the newly released products but wondering if it will work to backup via cloud/replicate to an older pro model?
Or is RSYNC still a better option for off-site backups?
Thanks!

- chirpaLuminaryYou can use Replicate across the platforms, as long as you buy licences for each machine.
Rsync will work, ideally Rsync+SSH for compression/security. - fifer55ApprenticeIf it helps, I just needed to copy data from one ReadyNas to another. However, they were on the same LAN, albeit they were an Ultra 6 Plus and a Pro Pioneer. I tried RSync but it was "too slow" for me, even with a bonded NIC on the Ultra and single NIC on the Pro Pioneer.
What I ended up doing to copy ~7TB's of data was to set up an NFS copy first, and then Rsync the incremental back up. The transfers then were SUPER fast. The work around for this was:
Bond (LACP - Layer 3+4) the Ultra Pro Plus. I left the MTU @ 1500. Why? Because I had no time to troubleshoot I/O errors when set to Jumbo Frames @ 9000. Anyway, I set up back jobs on the Ultra 6 Plus to pull from the Pro Pioneer. Since both NIC's were active on the PP, I alternated the BU jobs utilizing both NIC's.
For example:
NIC 1 = media/folder a
NIC 2 = media/folder b
NIC 1 = media/folder c
etc.
That worked for me and I am happy. Was able to open random files. Next I will probably MD5 everything, except for my movies, as I don't care of those. - PostAspirant

I believe Replicate should be much easier to setup, however I have read mixed reviews on it. Would you have any experience as to recommend it? Or will I be better off in the long run if I stick to RSync+SSH? If so, would you know of any threads that deal with the setting up of Rsync + SSH over the internet? I am running two identical Pro 6 with Raidiator. Thank you! - chirpaLuminaryI tried out Replicate awhile, when I worked there and had 'free' licenses to use it. It wasn't reliable enough for me, would go offline often, or jobs just fail to run with unhelpful error codes. I ended up removing it and Remote from any systems I used.
Rsync+SSH would accomplish the goal, enough with the extra step of setting up firewall/port forwards, so one machine could reach the other on port 22/TCP. - royalefGuideRsync has worked well for me, except when it does a full backup (every 4 weeks). The full backup takes forever, but I have 7-8 TB. Even if I maintain a 500 mbps write rate (which I do see) it will take 33 hours.
Also, when RSYNC does these FULL backups, I think apps like Plex see file changes. I've had recurring issues with Plex suddenly declaring all movies to be "newly added". I suspect that this is a consequence of RSYNC's "full" backup.
My biggest annoyance is RSYNC incremental will not delete directories properly due to empty subdirectories existing or hidden/excluded .Apple files.
It's a sync, deletion is deletion. Very annoying.
I am contemplating replacing one of my Ultra4s with a 512. One backs up to the other. It will take drive juggling though.
I'm looking at moving 6x2 into the 512, and rebuilding everything on that. Problem is each Ultra4 has 2x2 in use. I'll have to break the backup RAID entirely and replace the 2x2tb drives of the Main unit 1 by 1. Then I'll have 6x2 to build the 512. I'll end up with 10tb usable in the 512 and 10 TB in the new "backup" ultra4. From the posts here, looks like NFS will be a better way to go for a full backup. - BigbearfAspirantI have a RNPP with 6 TB data. Got a new 516. Any update on best way to tranfer shares. I am backing up from one share to front USB via NTFS not EXT. I am interested in the best way to get things copied over. I think the best way is backup to USB and then restore to 516. If all goes well I may upgrade RNPP TO OS6 and then use Replicate between the two since replicate is free on OS6. How much is it on 4.2.26 and are they definitely cross compatible between the two platforms?
Any help would be appreciated.

The fastest way to copy stuff across would be via ordinary backup jobs (not Replicate) directly NAS to NAS. Perhaps using NFS or Rsync.
