Chipset in the ReadyNAS Ultra 4+

Hi, what chipset does the ReadyNAS Ultra 4+ have in it? I want to see how much memory and type I can add to it

  • First - Netgear does not support an increase in memory.

Second - Unless you are running memory intensive add on applications, an increase in memory is unlikely to provide any significant increase in the file transfer speed. The file transfer speed is already bumping up against the max throughput for a gigabit network.

Third - if you increase the memory and the memory causes a data problem, Netgear tech support may refuse support since the memory is not supported.

With all that, the best way to find out the memory it will take, is to take the current module out and match it. By reading the label on the stock module you will know the speed and CL rating of the stock memory. When you put the new memory in, be sure to run the memory check on the boot menu several times. Each time you run it, it will run through 8 tests and it will take several hours for each pass.
  • Thanks for the info, on another note, what is the point of having 2 network ports on the NAS?

On home models you can connect each NIC to different switches to have a "manual failover" in case one switch, cable or NIC dies. You could also use it to connect to 2 different networks if you had that in your home.

On business models, there are several different bonding/failover options to increase bandwidth and failover protection.

Here is a list of the different options for the business models.

  • Thanks, so plugging them both into the same switch is not going to benifit me?
  • It would give you 2 different IP addresses. I guess it would protect you if one of the NICs went out or cable went bad too.
