Dead NAS
HI, I have an older ReadyNAS at home and it seems to have died. No power to it.
I have tried a different power lead and tried a different power socket. I have also tried a different device with the power lead and socket which works fine.
I have taken off the outside case and checked to see if I can see anything obvious but nothing stands out to me.
Can any suggest anything I can check/test to try and get some power to it?
If I was to buy a ReadyNas 104 would I be able to put in the 4 drives I currently have and get to the information on it?
TIA
Andy

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhich model do you have? Depending on which model you have and when you purchased it it may still be under warranty.
So when you attempt to power it on you see no lights, you don't hear the fan going, nothing?
Sounds like a dead PSU.
If you purchase a 104 you would need help from support to recover your data and you would need somewhere to copy the data off to.
If your current model is a NVX/Ultra/Ultra Plus/Pro you would be better off going with a 314. Again you would need to copy the data off somewhere but it would be much easier with this model.
After copying the data off you would need to do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) then restore data from backup.
You would need to be careful either way to follow the procedure support gives to you. - moriteAspirantThanks for the quick reply.
Currently I have a NVX.
Is it possible to buy and replace the PSU as this sounds like the easiest option - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWe don't sell replacement PSUs.
The NVX (not Pioneer) has a 5 year limited hardware warranty.
The NVX Pioneer has a 3 year limited hardware warranty.
Have you checked to see if your unit is still under warranty?
With e.g. a 314, you should be able to:
1. Put a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the 314
2. Update the firmware to latest
3. Verify the update was successful
4. Power down and remove the spare disk
5. Move your disks across (best to keep drive order the same)
6. Power on
7. Backup your data
8. Do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything)
9. Restore data from backup.
Note it would be considerably more difficult with the 104, so I would not recommend the 104.
However if you have a Sparc ReadyNAS e.g. Duo, NV, NV+, 1100 then the 104 would likely not be any more difficult than the 314, however the procedure would be more difficult than using a 314 to get data back from an NVX. - moriteAspirantHow can I check if it is still in Warranty?
I don't have any of the original paper work or receipts
I have the serial number (<REMOVED BY MODERATOR>) and the model (RNDX4420) it has a sticker on the back that says FW: V4.2.8 which I assume is the original firmware
Many Thanks for you quick responses - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt looks like your unit was never registered.
If it was purchased less than 5 years ago we would need proof of purchase before being able to process an RMA claim.
Yes 4.2.8 would be the firmware that was on the unit when it shipped. From that one can conclude it should still be under warranty if you can prove you were the original purchaser as 4.2.8 was released in November 2009: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35724 - If you purchased on-line and had a user account, you might be able to still see the purchase history. Certainly you can with Amazon.
