Disappointed with my Netgear readyNAS Duo purchase :(
After 3 years of disappontment with my Iomega NAS (it never did half the things it promised it could and had terrible support to the point where Iomega don't reply to any customer questions or do any firmware updates for it anymore) I decided to pay out a little extra £££ and get a Netgear readyNas Duo (Netgear being a name everybody told me is the best for NAS & Networking).
1 of the reasons I purchased this model on the spur of the moment was due to a sells pointer on the box where it clearly states "embedded BitTorrent" client for direct downloading from the internet.
After a week playing with the settings and getting things set up how I like them I find that the BitTorrent client freezes up all the time, the download manager wont respond or open half the time and I am forced to shut down and reboot the NAS and restart the client several times a day. I am only downloading a few files a week ! and seeding 20-30 files max (at low speed).
I hoped a firmware up date to RAIDiator 4.1.8 [1.00a043] would improve things, but if anything it seems to be slower and worse than before !
I have almost given up on the misleading advertised "embedded BitTorrent" and have also tried and failed to get "Transmission" working that everybody says is the best 3rd party alternative. (it askes for user name and passwords but fails to except them all the time)
I hope I am not going to regret buying another Nas and having similar problems I had with Iomega.
I wait for a reply in the hope somebody will restore my faith in Netgear !

Dom - I believe, but may be wrong, that Netgear Pulled their BT Client from fairly recent updates of firmware. This also applied to new, off the shelf units I believe, but again, I could be wrong.
It might only apply to x86 NAS units, rather than the much older (& slower) SPARC units, like a Duo. I just know that I have seen "official" comment on this matter recently, by one of the crew here. Chirpa, maybe? (I'm just guessing, I can't recall whose post I'm thinking of, if I'm being 100% honest.)
Anyway, the DUO BT that was built in was always a bit iffy IMO, so I binned that pretty much instantly. - I don't use it often, but when I do, Transmission does the job for just fine.
Super_Poussin is dev for Transmission, and does it all in his free time, and has recently pushed out new updates/fixes for the x86 version of Transmission. Maybe he's done the same for the SPARC units too? I haven't checked fully, sometimes the betas get hidden in the discussion or feedback area of the Addon section.

I am installing this on my old DUO for testing only, but I'll update this post with more once it's finished. - yoh-dahGuideThe BT client has been removed from both Sparc and x86 lines. As reported by InTheShires, Transmission is what a lot of folks prefer and the add-on exists for Sparc -- see here:
