Drive or ReadyNAS failure? I can't decipher alert...
I've had this ReadyNAS NV+ a long time, and this one has given me no trouble until now.
I'm receiving email alerts "Access to the disk on channel (??) is producing I/O errors. Although the array is still redundant, please replace this drive as soon as possible, as it is likely to fail soon." which I cannot decifer. I do not understand why it would not be able to tell me what disk is causing problems, if any disk is causing problems.
Searching here and on Google, I believe it is either an indication that at least 1 disk is failing (tolerable) or that the ReadyNAS itself is failing (unacceptable). Although the exact alert I've received has been described various times, I never found anyone who posted a resolution of the issue (except for 1 who replaced his Duo). I've included the SMART log from the ReadyNAS below.
The SMART status is "OK+" across the board, and the Health tab on the ReadyNAS shows no problems. The drives resynced as an array several weeks ago, but otherwise nothing has changed. The SMART status "windows" I can open up from the admin page show very similar (practically identical) values for all 4 drives, including "Hard disk resets - 486" on all 4 drives. Only drive 1 shows "Retries - 486" - the others are "0." These values are not included in the SMART log for some reason. That's the only thing that seems concerning to me, but I can't find a description of that value anywhere.
Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredProbably /dev/hdg is the culprit looking at the current pending sector count.
Your disks are not on the compatibility list. Also the Load Cycle Count on your disks is pretty high.
I'd suggest you power down your NAS, remove disks (label order), connect them up to a SATA port in your PC and check them using WD Lifeguard Diagnostics. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserA current pending sector count of 1465 is definitely a bad sign. I'd replace that disk no matter what Lifeguard said.
- drewe2000AspirantYikes! Thanks! There are several things you both brought to my attention.
I didn't realize the Load Cycle Counts were that high - most drives are rated for 300,000-600,000, and I thought that number was in the 40,000s, not 400,000s.
Somehow I didn't spot the Current Pending Sector Count on that one drive either.
I also had no idea these drives weren't on the compatibility list - I swear they were when I ordered and installed them (I'm careful about that kind of thing) but they clearly are not. I must have looked in the wrong place, read something that was optimistic about them, or simply misread the list.
I plan to finish backing things up fully, power down, test the drives with Lifeguard, and put compatible drives in the NAS regardless of the result.
I will post back with anything that I find or do so that others can at least refer to this. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe compatibility list did specify a different suffix for the WD20EARS. It specified the 00S8B1. So even when the WD20EARS was on the compatibility list your model was not.
The Load Cycle Count increasing rapidly is due to a WDIDLE3 setting on the drive. You can hook it up to a PC and run WDIDLE3 on it to change the setting.
