Duo (RND2120) with 3 Tb drives?

I have to replace one of the two 2 Tb HDs on my Duo - Smart error messages are coming every other day now (65 bad sectors to date, no idea how bad this is) and I sometimes have to reboot the NAS in order for the backups to star on Time Machine.

I checked the list of compatible HD on Netgear's "Hardware Compatibility List Hard Disks" page, duly selected the "ReadyNas2120" tab and surprise, in the list of recommended drives, you get a few 3 and 4 Tb drives.

Western Digital WD RED WD30EFRX 3 TB
    Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB
    Toshiba MG03ACA300 3 T
B

I always thought that the RND 2120 was limited to 2 x 2Tb HDs.

1/ Can I safely install a 3Tb drive in the RND210? Not that I need much more than 1Tb at present, but the price difference between 2 and 3Tb is small and that would future-proof my Nas.
2/ If I can install a 3 Tb HD, do i need to changed the existing 2 Tb drive to have two matching 3 Tb?

Tnaks!

  • Hi mdgm

    Thanks for your answer.

Interesting stuff. The casing model number indeed reads v2, but Raidar does concur, as this NAS runs 4.1.11, so indeed a V1 trying to masquerade as V2... Thanks for pointing me to the "is it mutton dressed as lamb" page.

Well, no big deal. By the time I use a whole 2Tb, this NAS will be a bit obsolete and it will have done what it had to do.

Last thing is, the admin interface says health of both HD is OK, but the NAS send me an alert mail every so often, I have now 65 Reallocated sectors.

In your opinion, does this warrant changing the HD?

Thanks a lot for saving me buying the wrong HD, mdvm. Appreciated.

At one point Netgear suggested replacing them at ~50 reallocated sectors - I'm not sure if they are still saying that or not.

Anyway, I'd certainly replace it. The WD20EFRX works well and has a 3 year warranty.

You could even have been looking at the compatibility list for the RN2120 (4-bay rackmount) which is quite a different product again.

I agree that it would be good to replace the drive.

Once you have replaced the drive and got redundancy again you may wish to have a look at the Announcements section of the forum. In there you will see Announcements for 4.1.12 and 4.1.13. You can take a look at the Release Notes and see if there is anything in there that you need.

Big thanks to you, guys. Will do this, WD20EFRX sounds like a good candidate.

Thx again for all the advice, at last I know what I need to do. And yes, i was indeed looking at the 2120 compatibility list. If Netgear wanted to make things more confusing (labelling stuff v2 when it is a v1 series, using models names like 2120 that describe 2 or 4 bays NASs...) they would not do it any other way. Shame, as their products are great usually.

Also, until now, I was absolutely unaware of differences between HDs and thought that WD Green caviar was the answers to any HD question, but clearly, all HDs are not born equal. Learning stuff...

    Best!
  • Just ordered the WD20EFRX on Amazon, only £68 inc. delivery. Happy chap.

    Have a great weekend.
