Extra 2Gb drive for Duo - Missing screws...

Hi all, I bought a 2TB readynas duo and at the time got a free 2TB drive. Problem is I hadnt got round to putting the extra drive in for RAID until recently. I do not seem to have the screws to attach the HDD to the tray that slides into the NAS unit.

Anyone know where I can buy these? I have tried using some spare screws I have from an old HDD etc but they are all too big and stops the disk sliding in.

Thanks,

Paul.

  • The screws are unique. They are stainless steel 6-32 flathead screws that are 4mm in length. They are the same screws that assemble the chassis. In fact, the only screws on the entire unit that are different are the 4 holding the fan in place.

First - have you removed the second tray and checked to see if a small bag with spare screws is taped to the tray?

Next - Check your documentation that came with the Duo and see if there is a small bag of screws in there. Sometimes they are packed there.

Finally - Check the original box the Duo came in, as sometimes the bag of screws is in the box.

If all that fails, contact technical support and push for them to ship you some replacement scews. If you have had the unit more than 90 days, you will have to open an on line ticket.

On a temporary basis, you can "borrow" two screws from the drive in bay 1. Be careful, there have been comments that the screws installed at the factory are inserted with a driver drill and may be very tight. Use a #1 Phillips, and press down firmly when trying to loosen the screws. Although you are only removing two, in a diagonal pattern, it might be prudent to loosen the other two and then just snug them back up. The trick about using only two screws in a diagonal pattern comes from one of the Jedi who pointed out that when testing drives in their lab, to save time they only use two in a diagonal pattern.

Finally, a third party source is here. These screws are 1/4" rather than 4MM, but they will work. They are also not stainless steel. At $2.95 for a pack of 20, plus whatever the shipping costs are, is not bad.
  • I tried buying those screws from Discount Technology but they were too big and the screws aren't flush enough to slide the tray back in. Were you able to get these to work?
  • They may not be the same then. When this issue has arisen in the past, this was recommended by another member and I kept the link. At one time Yoh-dah had the actual specification drawing of the Infrant/Netgear screw on the forum, but the image hosting site has closed down. I compared the listing from Discount Technology with the original drawing and the only difference I could tell is that the Infrant/Netgear screws are 4MM long and the ones from Discount Technology are 1/4" long. A tad bit longer (6.4 mm) but most drive holes are more than deep enough. It was the flat head that is important.

Open an online case with tech support, start a new discussion in the forum and be sure to add the case number at the end of the subject line. If you don't get a good response from tech support, post the response and hopefully a Jedi will see the discussion that pound on the heads of tech support. I am sorry to have wasted your time and money. I am assuming you "borrowed" a couple of screws from the panel attachment points to get your drive in service.
  • These screws are very hard to source here in the UK but this US supplier has them http://www.laptopscrews.com/HDD.htm
look down the bottom of the page they do ( 6-32 x 3/16 ) flat head counter sunk HDD screws 3/16 = 4.7625mm long so should work fine

HERBIEO this thread was a dead thread so one could conclude that the issue was resolved.
