Feedback - ReadyNAS Ultra 4
Hey,
I've been a frequent visitor of this forum for the past weeks to help me decide witch NAS I would buy. The final decision was between a Qnap TS 412 and an Ultra 4.
As you can see, the Ultra won the contest :).
I have for almost a week now, with 2x2TB Hitachi HDS723020BLA642 in XRaid 2 + akasa DuoDock 2 with 2x2TB WD Green and all is functioning as it should so far :), with some addons installed:
Photos II (by the way great vacation photos yoh-dah - why do you take the exif info? I wanted to take peek at your settings ;))
Plex
ReadyNAS Remote
Dropbox
So, pretty happy so far, although I have a few (4) questions:
1 - I have a Xtreamer Ultra as my living room HTPC running Openelec and my movies are in the 2WD disks (NTFS). I tried running some movies in openelec through SMB and the big movies (40gb, 20gb and even some 15gb mkv's) stutter. Then I tried to use a FTP link and it was a bit better but some movie interruption for buffering still happened. Finally I gave NFS a go (although I don't know anything about linux - google is really a friend ;)) and it was even better but not perfect - I still can't run my 40GB Untouched bluray rip without any interruptions. Between Ultra 4 and Xtreamer ultra there are 2 gigabit routers (D-link DIR 855 and TP-Link TL-WR1043ND, the second one with DHCP off) and 3 cat 5e network cables. I have jumbo frames disabled.
The Ultra 4 should be able to "serve" these movies files with enough speed, right? Does it have anything to do with the USB setting (movies in usb dock in Ultra 4)? The cat 5e aren't enough? HELP?! :(
2 - Is there anyway I can send a link to a file in my NAS for someone to download it without him needing to have/know a login? I tried to send a link for a pdf file in a share and then I couldn't download it without loging in - here try it: https://ssaserver.dlinkddns.com/SsaWebfolder/TESTE.pdf
3 - I'm thinking of installing tonido addon. Can't find positive feedback about this addon (no problems instaling? no problems using it?), but I did find some negative feedback here in the forum. I don't want to need to call support because of an addon...
4 - The number of addons I install will surely hit my Ultra 4 capability to serve movie files to my htpc, right?
These are my 4 (loooong) questions. Hope someone can help me with these details that are messing with an otherwise perfect NAS experience.
Regards

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1) so you store your movies on the USB HDD? USB is a CPU hog. Try storing it on the internal disks of the NAS. Better to use USB disk for backup.
2) Take a look at Create a personal webserver on the ReadyNAS. The share you choose to use as your webserver share is where you'll need to put the files you want to share over the web with no password.
3) If you have issues you could post on the forum and possibly contact the add-on developer if the forum community is unable to come up with a solution.
4) Add-ons use up resources (CPU, memory etc.), but generally only if they are enabled. You can disable an add-on (but still have it installed). So if you have lots of addons installed and enabled or some resource intensive ones it will have an impact. You'll have to test things out.
The Ultra 4 has the slowest CPU of the current x86 range. See http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=499
For those with heavy needs, the Pro 6 is the best option.
