Hard Drive Error Codes

Apologies if this is a really obvious question, but is there somewhere where these are listed, linked to suggestions as to what you can do or need to do dependent on the code you get ?

I have a ReadyNas104, RAID 5, 3 disks. When right clicking, one of the disks is showing this message: "ATA Error: 4." Everything seems to be working fine, so what does this mean/do I need to be concerned ?

It would mean that the particular drive is starting to fail.

Just want to check, is your NAS set on Flex-RAID or XRAID? ATA error count might increase. It would be best if you set it on XRAID so that you'll just have to prepare a spare compatible disk for your NAS and you'll just have to insert it in replacement of the failing drive.

Just to clarify, the "4" is not a code, it is a count.

    Per this: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... n-readynas
ATA errors are where commands sent by the SATA controller on the ReadyNAS, were not performed by the hard drive. This may indicate that the disk has an internal hardware error and needs to be replaced.

Obviously keep you backups up to date, and monitor the count (and SMART stats) for the drive. I find the simplest way to do that is to download the logs - you can scroll through all the stats using the middle mouse button, but it doesn't work well from most of my PCs.
