Inserting a new HDD into Readynas 104 previously used in a PC
Readynas 104
Firmware 6.10.8
3 x 3TB set up as XRaid.
Hi
I want to install a 4th 3TB in the remaining slot on my Readynas set up in RAID 5 - XRAID
From reading it looks like I can just install it in the free slot and it will incorporate it into the system and expand my storage. Is that right?
Secondly, the spare 3TB I have has been pulled from a (Windows)PC. It is formatted and has data on it.
Does that matter? Will the NAS just format it and wipe it ?
If not, what to I need to do to the new HDD to make the NAS accept and include it?
Many thanks
Chris

Yes, just hot insert it (with the NAS running).
Though it is best to make sure you have an up-to-date backup of the files first.

You will need to select the drive on the volumes tab, and format it in the NAS using the control on the right. Then it will be added to the array.
Many 3 TB desktop drives use SMR technology - which is not a good choice for ReadyNAS systems. I recommend checking that this drive is CMR. If you don't know how to check, you can post the drive manufacturer and model here.
