Issues Mounting USB drives on RN516 with 6.2.0, 6.2.1, 6.2.2
I've been having intermittent problems with backups to my external USB drives failing because the drives are 'read-only.' A reboot usually solves that but lately it's been getting worse. I upgraded to 6.2.2 since there seems to be some indication that it solves this problem ("Fixed potential dangling external storage lock, which could cause external drives to not mount.").
But now only one of my external drives actually gets mounted. Both show up but they appear to be duplicates since the free space is the same and I'm certain that in reality it isn't. Furthermore, only one share appears and only one of the drives can be ejected. When the other is ejected it actually stays displayed but the free space goes to zero.
I've had a support case open for a while now but I'm not getting much from support. Hoping someone can help.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat model USB disks are these? Are they USB3 or USB2 ones?
Do you still have the problem regardless of whether the USB disks are connected to the front port on the NAS or the rear?
Do the USB disks have their own power supplies or are they bus powered? - ElPablo1AspirantThe USB disks are externally powered. I don't seem to experience the problem with the front port but I've reserved that for the UPS since the disks are USB 3.0. The disks are Seagate ST4000DM000 and WDC WD40EZRX. I've had intermittent problems with these and other disks since purchasing the nas 6 months ago but they essentially disappeared for a few months until coming back recently.
I've upgraded firmware on the disks, made sure sleep is not enabled, done full checks on both external disks using manufacturer software on Windows machine (10+ hours each). Disks are EXT4 formatted and I reformatted them with OS6 after replacing them once I finished my checks. - ElPablo1AspirantIn case it helps anyone... I went back to 6.2.0 from 6.2.2 and all of the problems I was experiencing: USB HDD Read-only, UPS disconnecting, poor performance are all gone and things are back to normal.
- Retired_MemberI ran into the read only issue as well some time ago. I have a 3rd method for backuping up al data and config to a USB drive (USB 3.0 SSD 1TB). I noticed that the ready only issue occured if I physically disconnected the drive from USB from the ReadyNAS or from a Windows Machine with first "ejecting/disconnecting/unmounting" the drive from the ReadyNas or Windows first. So I instead have the follow method for USB drives.
1. Connect drive
2. Setup backups to trigger on backup button
3. Setup Backup Order.
4. Last backup turn on the disconnect drive upon completion option.
5. Press Backup button
6. Wait for email that drive has been disconnected.
7. Repeat
If connecting to a windows machine make sure to "eject" the drive before physically removing it.
Hope this helps. P.S. You're not the only one I've come across a few forum topics similar to this.
