Large storage for all Apple household

I've been thinking a lot lately about getting a NAS for my all Mac (4 macs) household but I've been reading a lot and I think I've talked myself out of it and instead would be better off with a direct-attach RAID drive. I currently use a Mac Mini with multiple firewire drives to hold media and my iTunes library is on a 1TB Firewire drive. As I've accumulated more and more video I've outgrown it. Not to mention I have to leave the Mini running at all times so I can stream media to our two Apple TV 2's. But it seems that serving up media (esp video) in an iTunes compatible way is kludgey at best. And it appears that storing the actual iTunes library from my mini on the NAS is kludgey too requiring sym links or other hacks. And if you do it, syncing media to my iPhones & iPads would be sloooooow storing the library on the NAS.I blame Apple for making it so tough to try anything outside of their walled garden. At least Time Machine backups seem to work ok to a ReadyNAS.

Am I wrong about this? Is there a reliable way to serve up media to Apple TV's with a NAS? Or am I better off with a direct-attach solution? I like the other features of the ReadyNAS (X-Raid2, photo sharing, ftp, etc) so if I bought a NAS it would be the Netgear.

Thank you!

If you are willing to jailbreak AppleTV then you have some non-iTunes options.

Personally I stream to Mac Minis. I store my iTunes libraries on the Macs themselves but stream my
    non-iTunes media from the NAS.
  • I know how to jailbreak devices but to be honest, I like the simplicity of just accepting Apple's updates when they are released and not having to re-install apps or hacks. It comes down to time. I have very little to tinker anymore :-( I think buying Apple TV 2's was a mistake, truth be told, since iTunes itself is so limiting. I have a TiVo Premier and a TiVo HD and technically I could stream to them, but their interfaces are so bad...I digress.

    Thank you for the feedback.
