Memory recommendation for ReadyNas Pro 6
I wanted to upgrade memory in my unit so I bought some recommended SODIMM memory which people were successfully using with ReadyNas Ultra 6. To my surprise unit I have does not use SoDIMM but rather long desktop memory.
PC2-6400 DDR2 as I understand. Did anyone have any success fitting more memory in this unit and what vendor did you use ?

- PapaBear1ApprenticeInteresting, I would have thought the Ultra 6 and Ultra 6 Plus would have used the same memory modules as the Pro 6.
First upgrading the memory is not recommended as it is not supported by Netgear and they can refuse to offer tech support for problems. Second, unless you are running a heavy batch of add ons, it is unlikely that you will note any increase in perfromance as the stock Pro 6 is capable of more than saturating the gigabit ethernet network path.
However, if you are insistent, I always recommend to anyone upgrading the memory in an computing device to remove the stock device, not the type, speed, and cl (timing) rating of the module and then match it, only a little larger. In this case if you match it directly, it may work in the second DIMM slot. Be sure to run the memory test through several times (it will take hours) with a scratch drive in the unit and only the new module to make sure it is acceptable. Ill performing memory can corrupt the OS or the data on the drives.
In my opinion, several big downsides to little upsides. PeterZaitsev wrote: Did anyone have any success fitting more memory in this unit and what vendor did you use ?
Overkill but here is a link to the 8GB (2x 4GB) sticks I'm using in one of my Pro-6.

As PapaBear mention, memory upgrades aren't supported anymore and can cause data corruption. If you do decide to proceed, keep the original RAM for troubleshooting down the road to eliminate the RAM as the culprit. And make sure to run many memory tests before you put live data on it!
EDIT: See post below.- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredUltra 6 uses very different hardware to Ultra 6 Plus/Pro 6.
The Ultra 6 has an Atom CPU, whereas the Ultra 6 Plus/Pro 6 use much faster Pentium CPUs. It's not surprising that they use different memory. - PapaBear1ApprenticeI understand the use of SODIMMs in the 2 bay and 4 bay chassis because of room, but the 6 bay has a lot of room. The Ultra 6 Plus uses the exact Intel CPU that the Pro Pioneer and Pro Business Editions used. In fact, I think the first few Ultra 6 Plus units identified themselves as a Pro Pioneer for a while until RAIDiator updates took care of it. So, it seemed logical to me (without an actual one to look at) that the memory slots would be very similar.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Ultra 6 Plus uses the same memory as the Pro Pioneer and Pro BE and probably the same as the Pro 6. It's just the Ultra 6 (not Plus) that's different. The Ultra 6 has pretty much completely different hardware to the other 6 bay units.
- Edited from above...
In my 2nd Pro-6 I am using Cosair TWIN2X4096-6400C5 (2x2GB sticks). - ScottChapmanApprenticeJust bought some http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148160
(PC2-6400 CL6 with NO heatsinks or anything).
Seem like that will work?
