Need Help - ReadyNAS Ultra 4 - Access
Good day,
Im sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didnt see any that seemed to be specifically for the NAS products. As this listed as General I thought Id start here.
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4, its got some years on it for sure. Pre-covid (probably closer to 2018/19) I got another NAS that I started to use a lot more as it offered cloud service at that time, my NAS did not, and I needed to have access to files outside of the home. Anyways, I got my new NAS and that was fine, my NG ReadyNAS still worked, I used it for back up of family files, etc. Covid hit, and well, things went on the back burner and I hadnt accessed the NAS in a couple of years. About 4 months ago, the computer I use to access it from BLEW UP BAD.. Like nothing left of the hard drive, and no way to access the NAS.
Forward ahead a couple of months, new computer, attempt to log into the NAS but dont remember the password. UGH... Dont want to have to format it, lots of family photos and documents stored on the drives. In speaking with a number of folks, they recommended resetting the OS, it would leave the files intact, but would reset the password making it all work again..
Ok, did that, reset the password, BUT when I attempt to access the NAS I either get a screen that tells me there are no "shares" or I when I click on the drive shown in the network listings I get a screen that tells me an error (error 0x80004002 : No such interface supported)
For the life of me, I cant figure out how to access the NAS. HELP PLEASE.

(https://nas-ip-address/admin - using the real NAS IP address of course). If you run into the SSL protocol/CIPHER mismatch error in your browser, post back.
This is a clue that your NAS is running 4.2.x firmware. It can be converted to run OS-6, so that is something to consider.
The default password for 4.2.x is netgear1. The default for 6.x firmware is password.

First get into the web admin ui, and set the admin password you want. It's best not to use the default. Also see if you created any user accounts. If you did, then you likely need to reset the password for the user account also.
Then if you are running 4.2.x firmware, go into "turn windows features on or off" and make sure the SMB 1/CIFS client is enabled.
Try entering \\nas-ip-address in the file explorer address bar (again using the real NAS IP). Make sure you are using the correct slash - // will open your web browser, which is not what you want.
You might also need add the NAS credentials to the Windows Credential Manager.

"No shares" is likely just telling you you haven't enabled HTTP(S) access for any shares (it's off by default), not that the shares are gone, unless you inadvertently did a "Factory Default" (which does wipe the NAS) instead of an "OS Reinstall". So don't panic, just let StephenB guide you to access them.
