NV+ Failing Seagate disk #23579190
I have NV+ since Nov 2011, always on, used primarily for backup (time-machine style backup for windows).
Four 2TB Seagate ST2000DL003 drives in XRAID - two are -301 with CC32 firmware and two are -302 with CC3C firmware. One of the -301 models is failing with growing reallocated sector count, so I reckon its time to replace it.
I've read on the forum that these drives are problematic. Perhaps I've been lucky because I've noticed the NAS hanging but never had to resync the drives due to drop out.
However, I'm nervous about replacing one of the drives and perhaps having a cascade effect on the others. (And Seagate says they cannot find the CC3D firmware for me, and the drives are out of warranty)
Buying ST2000DL003 to replace does not make sense given what is reported on the forum, so I'm looking for recommendations. Most of the drives on the HCL are not even available any more.
I cannot find a good source for Barracuda XT but maybe can get one. I see recommendation for WD20EFRX or ST2000VN000 from StephenB but I wonder would these drives be compatible with the ST2000DL003's that remain?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou can mix and match different drive models. The WD RED would be a good choice. Do check our compatibility list before purchasing drives.

Alternatively could you email your logs to me: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/21543 (be sure to mention my forum handle 'mdgm' in the subject) - grevilleaAspirantSupport case 23579190 with logs attached.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDisk 2 has 752 reallocated sectors. It also has a current pending sector count of 24 and offline uncorrectable of 24 (for a healthy disk these counts will be zero) which show it needs to be replaced.
We would normally recommend replacing a disk when the reallocated sector count reaches 50 (though you could replace it sooner if you wish).

The reallocated sector count is growing very rapidly which is yet another sign it needs to be replaced. - grevilleaAspirantAgreed drive needs replacing. I can buy the wd20efrx red but that is not
The one on the HCL which seems to no longer be available. Not much
Point buying st2000dl003 given problems people report. So would the
Wd red be the choice to make? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you do go with the WD RED as the disk is not on the compatibility list you should make an extra effort to make sure you have an up to date backup. If something goes wrong at least then you have a backup to fall back on.
I certainly would not recommend the SeaGate ST2000DL003 (if you do get one of these be sure it has CC3D firmware or newer before buying it).
Regardless of which disk you choose it is important to have a good backup.
